Look at life of South Africa President Jacob Zuma

By The Associated Press

JOHANNESBURG (AP) - Events in the life of South African President Jacob Zuma, who was elected Tuesday to again head the governing African National Congress:

___

- April 12, 1942: Born in Inkandla in the rural Zulu heartland.

-1959: Joins the ANC as a teen and just a few years later is arrested while trying to leave the country illegally. Jailed for 10 years on Robben Island, alongside Nelson Mandela.

-1975: Goes into exile. For the next decade and a half in Swaziland, Mozambique and Zambia where he was appointed chief of the ANC's intelligence department.

-1990: ANC unbanned and Zuma among the first leaders to return to South Africa.

-1994: After first all-race vote, serves as economic affairs minister in KwaZulu-Natal, his home province.

-1999: Then-president Thabo Mbeki names him deputy president.

-2003: Prosecutors say they have a case against Zuma, but not one they are sure they can win, and so decide not to prosecute. Zuma was accused of taking a 500,000-rand bribe to protect a French arms company from a government probe into corruption. The corruption investigation centered around a 1999 deal for South Africa to buy ships, submarines, helicopters, jets and other weaponry from European and South African firms.

-2005: Fired as deputy president, but remains deputy president of the ANC under Mbeki, after being implicated in corruption trial of close friend and financial adviser Schabir Shaik. Later that year, prosecutors say they will charge Zuma with two counts of corruption.

-2006: Judge strikes Zuma's corruption case off the roll because the prosecution is not ready. That same year, Zuma is acquitted of raping an HIV-positive family friend, although his confession that he took a shower to prevent the risk of AIDS earned him ridicule.

-2007: Zuma beats Mbeki in ANC leadership race. Within days, Zuma is indicted on corruption charges.

-2008: Judge dismisses corruption case on procedural grounds in ruling that raises possibility of political meddling in the case. ANC responds by firing Mbeki as the nation's president, replacing him with Kgalema Motlanthe, seen as a caretaker until Zuma can take over.

-Early 2009: South Africa's second-highest court rules in favor of prosecutors' appeal, clearing way for new corruption trial against Zuma. However, nation's top prosecutors, acknowledging case had been tainted by political meddling, drop corruption charges and say they won't be refiled, though they insist case is solid.

-April 22, 2009: Zuma's ANC party sweeps parliamentary elections.

-May 6, 2009: South Africa's Parliament elects Zuma as the country's next president.

-May 9, 2009: Zuma sworn in as president of South Africa.

-June-July 2010: South Africa hosts successful World Cup, which Zuma said showed nation's ability to stand on world stage and be "united in our diversity."

-May: An art gallery shows "The Spear," a painting of Zuma with his genitals exposed. The ANC demands the painting be removed and vandals later deface it.

-August: Police officers open fire on striking miners, killing 34 in the worst violent attack by state security forces against protesters since the end of apartheid. Zuma faces criticism for his response and the ANC is accused of ignoring the poor they should represent.

-December: ANC holds its convention in Mangaung to pick its leader for the next five years, overwhelming re-electing Zuma over Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe.

Some interesting, insightful, or amusing things I?ve been reading this week.

The DSM-V is out

I?m not a psychologist, but the DSM, or Diagnostic Systems Manual, is still important to my research, but as someone who teaches evolutionary medicine, most especially my teaching. I have been teaching the shift from the DSM-IV to DSM-V (excuse me, I guess it?s DSM-5 now) ?for the past several years, with students doing a close reading of the proposed changes, or projects on some of the new diagnoses. It will be interesting this year to have a finalized document to talk about ? as well as the reactions. Two of the main ones I?ll be assigning:

The DSM-5 has been finalized by Vaughan Bell. Bell summarizes the major changes ? mostly I can?t believe they took out the bereavement clause for depression.

The New Tamper Tantrum Disorder by David Dobbs. A smart perspective on the pathologizing of normal behavior.

Why Do Women Leave Biology? This is the page for the press release of an article in?BioScience, but it links to the pdf of the manuscript. Shelley Adamo takes a smart look at the factors that drive attrition of female scientists. She suggests that the factors that are blamed for fewer female scientists exist in medicine, but the same gender differences in attrition don?t exist. Adamo claims policy issues drive differences instead (for instance, mandated parental leave seems to reduce attrition in Canada but doesn?t exist in the US).?I agree.

How to Email a Professor over at WikiHow. Overall not bad advice. I find it interesting that in the how to address professors section, they tell you how bad it is to call a professor ?Mr.,? but only say it?s bad to call a female professor (note professors are default-male) ?Mrs.? Personally, I take issue with anything that isn?t Dr. or Prof. if I don?t know the student. Once I know the student, particularly if I advise them, Kate is fine.

Stop Saying That. A great blog post that points out the error of complaining that women should ?put as much time and effort into researching their birth as they do researching their next smartphone.?

Sexist humor? leads to more sexism. In the same vein as ?stop saying that,? stop permitting sexist humor in your workspace, your home, among your friends. Don?t be a silent witness, and be the guy who interrupts sexism. You don?t have to be obnoxious about it, but if you let it go, you?re telling your friends that being sexist is ok.

The flipped academic: turning higher education on its head. This article describes academics who are doing outreach or making their results available to the public before putting them in academic jargon-speak and up for peer review. Certainly an article that supports those of us that blog, but I didn?t see a clear way the flipped academic was going to push her university to consider her for tenure under that model. Also, why are we into ?flipping? so much in academia right now (I?ve also read a few articles on ?flipping? the classroom)? Why not call it ?inverted? or ?transparent? or ?outreach-focused??

And now my favorite post: Michael Eisen puts Darwin?s Tangled Bank in verse. Eisen wrote this poem because his daughter needed to recite a poem for school, and he wanted to give her something scientific and beautiful. He totally wins at parenting. Some day my daughter will learn this, too.

Tom Cruise loves being in London

Tom Cruise loves filming in London.

The 50-year-old actor has had a blast over the past five months shooting his new action flick 'All You Need Is Kill' in the UK capital and other parts of the country and thinks British crews and set designers are among the best in the world.

Speaking in the new issue of Britain's OK! magazine, he said: ''I've been here for almost five months. I love it here. I've made so any films here and the time I've spent, it's wonderful, you've got so many great crews here, great craftsmen. Of course, I've worked with so many of the actors here and it's a wonderful place to live.''

The Hollywood icon - whose divorce from 'Dawson's Creek' star Katie Holmes was finalised in July - admits one of his motivations for getting into acting was to experience a jet-set lifestyle, because he loves to travel.

Even though Tom misses his six-year-old daughter Suri - who lives in New York City with her mother Katie - while he is in England, he insists the cast and crew on 'All You Need Is Kill' have become like a family because they have bonded so well.

Tom enthused: ''I love travelling. I dreamed of being able to travel to different places, there's not just one particular thing. I've made a lot of films here so a lot of the crew I've known since I was a kid, so it's just a real pleasure.''

Exit polls: Conservative LDP wins Japan election

TOKYO (AP) ? Japan's conservative Liberal Democratic Party stormed back to power in parliamentary elections Sunday after three years in opposition, exit polls showed, signaling a rightward shift in the government that could further heighten tensions with rival China.

The victory means that the hawkish former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will almost certainly get a second chance to lead the nation after a one-year stint in 2006-2007. He would be Japan's seventh prime minister in six-and-a-half years.

Public broadcaster NHK's exit polls projected that the LDP, which ruled Japan for most of the post-World War II era until it was dumped in 2009, won between 275 and 300 seats in the 480-seat lower house of parliament. Official results were not expected until Monday morning. Before the election, it had 118 seats.

The results were a sharp rebuke for Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda's ruling Democratic Party of Japan, reflecting widespread unhappiness for its failure to keep campaign promises and get the stagnant economy going.

A serious-looking Abe characterized the win as more of a protest vote against the DPJ than an endorsement of his party.

"I think the results do not mean we have regained the public's trust 100 percent. Rather, they reflect 'no-votes' to the DPJ's politics that stalled everything the past three years," he told NHK. "Now we are facing the test of how we can live up to the public's expectations, and we have to answer that question."

The LDP will stick with its long-time partner New Komeito, backed by a large Buddhist organization, to form a coalition government, party officials said. Together, they will probably control about 320 seats, NHK projected ? a two-thirds majority that would make it easier for the government to pass legislation.

With Japan stuck in a two-decade slump and receding behind China as the region's most important economic player, voters appeared ready to turn back to the LDP.

The new government will need to quickly deliver results ahead of upper house elections in the summer. To revive Japan's struggling economy, Abe will likely push for increased public works spending and lobby for stronger moves by the central bank to break Japan out of its deflationary trap.

The ruling Democrats, which won in a landslide three years ago amid high hopes for change, captured less than 100 seats, exit polls indicated, down sharply from its pre-election strength of 230.

"This election result does not mean a popular mandate for the LDP, but that voters decided the DPJ had to go," said Masahiro Matsumura, a politics professor at St. Andrews University in Osaka. "Apparently voters felt they didn't have any alternative to the LDP, since the other parties failed to organize competent, experienced candidates."

Still, some voters said they supported the LDP's vows to build a stronger, more assertive country to answer increasing pressure from China and threats of North Korean rocket launches. Abe has repeatedly said he will protect Japan's "territory and beautiful seas" amid a territorial dispute with China over some uninhabited islands in the East China Sea.

"I feel like the LDP will protect Japan and restore some national pride," Momoko Mihara, 31, said after voting for the Liberal Democrats in the western Tokyo suburb of Fuchu. "I hope Mr. Abe will stand tall."

The LDP may also have benefited from voter confusion over the dizzying array of more than 12 parties, including several news ones, and their sometimes vague policy goals.

One of the new parties, the right-leaning, populist Japan Restoration Party, won between 40 to 61 seats, NHK projected. The party is led by the bombastic nationalist ex-Tokyo Gov. Shintaro Ishihara and Osaka Mayor Toru Hashimoto, both of whom are polarizing figures with forceful leadership styles.

Ishihara was the one who stirred up the latest dispute with China over the islands when he proposed that the Tokyo government buy them from their private Japanese owners and develop them.

Nuclear energy ended up not being a major election issue even though polls show about 80 percent of Japanese want to phase out nuclear power after meltdowns last year at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant caused by a massive earthquake and tsunami.

In the end, economic concerns won out, said Kazuhisa Kawakami at Meiji Gakuin University.

"We need to prioritize the economy, especially since we are an island nation," he said. "We're not like Germany. We can't just get energy from other countries in a pinch."

The staunchly anti-nuclear Tomorrow Party ? which was formed just three weeks ago ?captured between six and 15 seats, NHK estimated.

The LDP is the most pro-nuclear party, and has said Japan should decide over the next 10 years what sort of energy mix is best.

Abe, 58, is considered one of the more conservative figures in the increasingly conservative LDP.

During his previous tenure as prime minister, he pursued a nationalistic agenda pressing for more patriotic education and upgrading the defense agency to ministry status.

It remains to be seen how he will behave this time around, though he is talking tough toward China, and the LDP platform calls developing fisheries and setting up a permanent outpost in the disputed islands, called Senkakus by Japan and Daioyu by China ? a move that would infuriate Beijing.

During his time as leader, Abe also insisted there was no proof Japan's military had coerced Chinese, Korean and other women into prostitution in military brothels during Japan's wartime aggression in Asia. He later apologized but lately has suggested that a landmark 1993 apology for sex slavery needs revising.

He has said he regrets not visiting Yasukuni Shrine, which enshrines Japan's war dead, including Class-A war criminals, during his term as prime minister. China and South Korea oppose such visits, saying they reflect Japan's reluctance to fully atone for its wartime atrocities.

The LDP wants to revise Japan's pacifist constitution to strengthen its Self-Defense Forces and, breaching a postwar taboo, designate them as a "military." It also proposes increasing Japan's defense budget and allowing Japanese troops to engage in "collective self-defense" operations with allies that are not directly related to Japan's own defense.

It's not clear, however, how strongly the LDP will push such proposals, which have been kicked around by conservatives for decades but usually make no headway in parliament because they are supported only by a fairly small group of right-wing advocates.

"The economy has been in dire straits these past three years, and it must be the top priority," Abe said in a televised interview. "We must strengthen our alliance with the U.S. and also improve relations with China, with a strong determination that is no change in the fact the Senkaku islands are our territory."

Earn Money Online ? Website Marketing Tips

TIP! Record videos of your product demonstrations for your products. That way the customer is going to see you use the product.

So, you?ve made the decision to enter the world of Web marketing. Pretty riveting, isn?t it? It can seem extremely overwhelming at first. Do not worry, online marketing suggestions are here! The following article has tips that can help you begin your new career in Internet promotion.

TIP! While usually it?s wise to keep your personal and business lives separate, this is a possible exception. Because you are in it together, this venture does not create the same stress you feel when you owe someone else money.

Ensure your customers are aware that their personal and financial information is secure on your site. People are hesitant to send out personal information via the internet so do your best to assure them that your site is secure.

TIP! If you want to run a good advertising campaign, emphasize instant gratification. People often place more value on time than money; for this reason, emphasize speed and efficiency in your advertising copy.

Make sure to include free samples and coupons with shipping boxes that will relate to whatever product your customer will be receiving in the mail. Many people look at the coupons with gratitude and as an added incentive to go back to a website and make more purchases.

TIP! If you are good at writing, write some articles containing your business information to submit to websites and magazines that accept submissions of articles. You can use your writing skills to promote your business or website by creating great copy and distributing it generally across the Internet, or to a more targeted audience, if preferred.

Avoid generic 500 error pages in favor of a personalized page. This will happen when some database code you wrote decides to just stop working. If you use a generic page, all people will know is that the connection timed out. Customizing your 500 page will demonstrate to visitors that you are taking the proper steps to correct the problem and improve your site.

TIP! Be sure to back up any claims about your business or products that you make with cold hard facts. For example, if you?re selling a Spanish course, show a video of yourself speaking Spanish to prove how well it worked for you.

Facebook and Twitter are important tools to incorporate for marketing purposes. You can use these sites to advertise new offers or to share your latest articles. Keep in mind, on the other hand, that it does not pay to bombard your customer with comments. Instead, use the websites to provide insights with occasional promotions.

TIP! It is not a little-known secret that people tend to respect a position of authority in business. Let people know you are the top dog.

You may want to read psychological studies about online marketing and web design. Your brand can be affected by psychological factors based on the theme, outlay and color of your website. Learning which factors are positively and negatively received can help you design your website for maximum profitability.

Watching your competition will help you immensely in internet marketing. No matter what niche you are working in, you will always have competition.

TIP! Create product and service packages that you can sell at a wholesale discount, and propose distribution agreements with other retailers on the web. This way you can connect several markets and boost your total sales.

When writing content for your site, you should use italics and bolding to help get the message across. You can enhance the visibility and importance of words and phrases by making them bold, underlining them, or italicizing them. You can get your point across if you find out how your customers like being communicated with.

TIP! Keep a list of consumers who have purchased from you and later send out an online catalog or email, offering other items they might be interested in. Always tell them you appreciate their business and invite future purchases.

You have to have a superb website before you can attempt to get it ranked. All online businesses should begin with this idea. The more attractive your site appears, the less work it will be in the future.

TIP! Viral videos will bring enormous crowds of viewers to your website. However, it can take some real creativity and determination to develop a video that catches on with thousands and thousands, if not millions, of viewers.

One Online marketing tip that everyone should implement is giving your customers the option of paying retail or wholesale prices depending on how many of each item they buy. You should make profits on wholesales, but this can help you boost the number of products you sell.

TIP! Presenting visitors to your website with the option to subscribe to your ezine is an effective marketing technique that can help you build your customer base, particularly if you develop your ezine in a way that helps you establish a bond with your readers. Establish rapport with your readers by adding personal photos.

Stay up-to-date with what the Internet is up to. The Internet is always changing quickly, so it is important to keep up with the popular sites and new innovations. Doing so can give you ideas for getting your product to your target market.

Web Marketing

TIP! A website?s tag is one of its most important features. It tells the world who you are.

Web marketing needs to be taken seriously and researched well. Choose a trustworthy admirable online mentor. Many of these people will also advise you for a fee. Make sure to stick with a system that you think is good. Web marketing is well worth your time and effort, so be patient, and you will see results.

TIP! Inspire confidence in your products by offering a guarantee that you will return a customer?s money if they are not satisfied. You will gain credibility with your customers and begin to develop a sense of trust as well.

Now, don?t you feel relieved after reading all those tips? Although a great deal of information was included, you now have an idea of where to start and how to proceed when it comes to Affiliate marketing. Additionally, you can come back here to read the tips again if you forget or aren?t clear about something.

Egyptians vote in controversial referendum

Amr Abdallah Dalsh / Reuters

Supporters of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi and members of the Muslim Brotherhood chant pro-Morsi slogans during a rally in Cairo on Friday in the runup to Saturday's vote on a draft constitution.

By NBC News wire services

Updated at 9:31 a.m. ET: Egyptians voted on Saturday on a constitution promoted by its Islamist backers as the way out of a prolonged political crisis and rejected by opponents as a recipe for further divisions in the Arab world's biggest nation.

Lines formed outside polling stations in Cairo and other cities and soldiers joined police to secure the referendum process after deadly protests during the build-up. Street brawls again erupted on Friday in Alexandria, Egypt's second city. ?

ANALYSIS: As Egypt votes, what is at stake?

The opposition says the constitution is too Islamist and tramples on minority rights. Morsi's supporters say the charter is needed if progress is to be made toward democracy nearly two years after the fall of military strongman Hosni Mubarak.

Highlighting the tension in the run-up to the vote, nearly 120,000 army troops were deployed on Saturday to protect polling stations. Clashes between Morsi's supporters and opponents over the past three weeks have left at least 10 people dead and about 1,000 wounded.

"The times of silence are over," bank employee Essam el-Guindy said as he waited to cast his ballot in Cairo's upscale Zamalek district. "I am not OK with the constitution. Morsi should not have let the country split like this."

El-Guindy was one of about 20 men standing in line. A separate women's line had twice as many people. Elsewhere in the city, hundreds of voters waited outside polling stations for nearly two hours before stations opened at 8 a.m.

PhotoBlog:?Egyptians vote on divisive constitution

"I read parts of the constitution and saw no reason to vote against it," said Rania Wafik as she held her newborn baby while waiting in line. "We need to move on and I just see no reason to vote against the constitution."

In Alexandria on Friday, tensions boiled over into a street brawl between rival factions armed with clubs, knives and swords. Several cars were set on fire and a Muslim preacher who had urged people to vote "yes" to the constitution was trapped inside his mosque by angry opposition supporters.

NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin is outside the presidential palace in Cairo where hundreds of thousands are protesting what they say is an unjust constitution. They want to delay a vote on the current draft of the constitution now scheduled for December 15.?

In the capital, Cairo, both sides made low-key final efforts to rally supporters.

Flag-waving Islamists gathered peacefully at one of the main mosques, some shouting "Islam, Islam'' and "We've come here to say 'yes' to the constitution."

Opposition supporters ? who have been urged to vote "no" by their leaders ? assembled outside the presidential palace.

The building remains ringed with police, soldiers and tanks after street clashes caused at least eight deaths earlier this month in violence prompted by Morsi's decision to award himself sweeping powers in order to ram through the new charter.

ANALYSIS: Egypt's military maintains watchful eye on politics

The referendum will be held on two days ? this Saturday and next ? because there are not enough judges willing to monitor all polling stations after some in the judiciary said they would boycott the vote.

Egyptians are being asked to accept or reject a constitution that must be in place before a parliamentary election can be held next year ? an event many hope can steer the country toward stability.

The measure is generally expected to pass, given the well-organized Muslim Brotherhood's record of winning elections since the fall of Mubarak. Many Egyptians, tired of turmoil, may simply fall in line and vote "yes."

If the constitution is voted down, a new assembly will have to be formed to draft a revised version, a process that could take up to nine months.

ANALYSIS: Egypt is rapidly approaching its own 'cliff'

Just over half of Egypt's electorate of 51 million will vote in the first round in Cairo and other cities. Polling stations opened at 8 a.m. (0600 GMT) and will close 12 hours later.

Official results will not be announced until after the second round, though it is likely that details will emerge after the first round that will give an idea of the overall trend.

The charter has been criticised by some overseas bodies.
