Multi-threaded MIPS64 SoC doubles cores to 16

NetLogic Microsystems announced a new version of its Linux-ready XLP processor family that doubles the number of MIPS64 cores on board to 16. The XLP864 supports up to 2GHz clock rates and, with the help of more than 80 processing engines, enables 80Gbps throughput and 120 million packets-per-second (Mpps) performance, says the company.

The XLP864 is the first XLP processor announced since NetLogic Microsystems tipped the original, eight-core XLP832 in May 2009. This was shortly after the company had acquired its MIPS processor line -- including the lower-end XLR and XLS multicore MIPS64 families -- in its purchase of RMI.

Both the XLP832 and XLP864 offer four-way multithreading, a four-issue superscalar engine, and out-of-order execution, thanks in large part to the incorporation of 64-bit MIPS EC4400 cores. The devices offer far more processing power than the number of cores would suggest, claims NetLogic.

The new XLP864, for example is said to offer 64 highly independent threads, which Netlogic dubs "nxCPUs." Each nxCPU thread is viewed by the operating system and application software as another core, according to NetLogic. While NetLogic never mentions the number of cores, it does allow that the device offers twice the threads that its predecessor did, indicating a 16-core design.

No clock rate was mentioned for the processor, but the XLP line in general is said to support up to 2GHz speeds, the maximum listed for the XLP832 as well. The XLP864 delivers 300-400 percent performance improvement over "competing multi-core processors in real-world benchmarks on a core-by-core basis," claims the company.

The processor is capable of delivering 80Gbps throughput and 120 million packets-per-second (Mpps) of performance, claims the company. Targeted applications are said to include next-generation 3G/4G mobile wireless infrastructure, metro Ethernet, security, storage, enterprise, edge, and core infrastructure network applications.

Each of the device's 64 NXCPUs are equipped with a tri-level cache architecture with over 25MB of combined, fully coherent on-chip cache, says NetLogic. This is said to help deliver 40 Terabits/sec of high-speed on-chip memory bandwidth. The XLP864 also features NetLogic's low-latency Enhanced Fast Messaging Network to enable high-bandwidth communication among the 64 NXCPUs, says the company.

Over 80 specialized processor engines

The XLP864 processor also supplies over 80 autonomous processing engines that offload certain network functions from the NXCPUs. These functions are said to include:

  • 80Gbps autonomous Security Acceleration Engine supporting networking, wireless, and storage encryption/decryption/authentication protocols
  • 80Gbps network acceleration engines for ingress/egress packet parsing and management
  • 256Gbps RAID-5/RAID-6 acceleration
  • 20Gbps compression/decompression
  • packet ordering
  • storage de-duplication acceleration
  • TCP segmentation offload
  • IEEE 1588 hardware time stamping
High-speed networking interfaces offered with the XLP864 include Interlaken, XAUI, SGMII, PCI Express, USB 2.0, and NetLogic's own high-bandwidth Inter-chip Coherency Interface (ICI). NetLogic has yet to post a web-page for the SoC listing these interfaces in more detail.

As with the XLP832, the XLP864 is manufactured in Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company?s (TSMC?s) 40nm process technology, says the company.

Linux SDK by Enea, Timesys

Like other NetLogic multicore processors, the XLP864 offers a software development kit (SDK) that contains reference and production-ready software components, says NetLogic. The Linux SDK appears to be the recently announced Enea Linux PlatformBuilder for NetLogic ("ELPB-NE"), which combines Enea's Eclipse-based IDE with Timesys' LinuxLink build system and related development tools.

Last July, NetLogic announced a Linux-based NLX321103A hardware/software development kit, claimed to be the first fully deterministic networking solution that concurrently processes Layers 2-7 at 40Gbps wire-speed. The solution combines the XLP832 on a module with the company's NL11k and NETL7 Layer 7 "knowledge-based" processors.

Later that month, the company announced a chipset module called the XLP8128S that combines four XLP832 SoCs with hundreds of specialized networking processor engines.

Stated Linley Gwennap, principal analyst of The Linley Group, "This design is already proven in the XLP832, which has been sampling to customers for more than six months. Since then, NetLogic has quickly completed the XLP864 design, extending this product line to new levels of industry-leading performance."

Availability

NetLogic Microsystems is currently accepting orders for the XLP864 processors within standard lead times. More information should eventually appear at NetLogic's XLP page.

Leica i9 concept pairs $1,000 camera with $200 iPhone

When you think of manufacturers that create products to go hand-in-hand with the Apple iPhone, Leica probably wouldn't come to mind. The seemingly brilliant minds at Black Design Associates hope to change that, however. The Leica i9 concept pairs an iPhone 4 with a fixed-lens rangefinder camera, and the result is nothing short of extraordinary. Slipping your iPhone 4 -- black or white -- into the back of the i9 brings the camera to life, activating the compact optical zoom, dedicated aperture and shutter dials, flash and light meter. Images are instantly viewable on the iPhone, where it's safe to assume they're stored as well. The camera back doubles as a case, but you're probably going to want to use it with a headset, unless you like talking to a camera. There's no sign that the i9 will even reach the prototype phase, but nobody is going to stop the high-end camera's designer from dreaming -- especially when said dreams make us weak at the knees.

GM Likely To Retake No. 1 Sales Spot From Toyota

General Motors is almost certain to claim the title of world's biggest automaker this year, retaking the top spot from Toyota, which has been hurt by production problems since the Japanese earthquake and still can't escape the shadow of major safety recalls.

The No. 1 title, a morale booster for the winner's employees and managers, would cap GM's remarkable comeback from bankruptcy.

GM's sales are up, mainly in China and the U.S, the world's top two markets. Cars are better than in the past, especially small ones.

But even though GM came within 30,000 sales of Toyota last year and began strong in 2011, any sales victory this year has more to do with Toyota's problems.

First, a series of big recalls has ballooned to 14 million vehicles worldwide and damaged Toyota's reputation for reliability. That has spurred loyal buyers to look at other brands.

Second, a March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan curbed Toyota's car production. On Friday, Toyota Motor Corp. said its factories worldwide won't return to full production until November or December. That means buyers across the globe may not be able to get the models they want. Already the crisis has cost the company production of 260,000 vehicles.

Last year, Toyota sold 8.42 million cars and trucks, barely ahead of a resurgent GM, which sold 8.39 million. GM held the No. 1 spot from 1932 until 2008.

Here's why GM is almost a lock to retake the lead this year:

A BETTER GM: General Motors Co. was dysfunctional three years ago, hobbled by enormous debt and a giant bureaucracy. Its quality was suspect, it lost billions, and it had few products other than pickups that buyers found appealing. After a government bailout, a leaner GM emerged from a 2009 bankruptcy with new vehicles and a focus on Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac. Since then, GM has come up with hits including the Chevrolet Equinox small SUV, the Buick LaCrosse luxury car, and the Chevrolet Cruze compact. Its quality is better. Sales so far this year are up 25 percent in the U.S. and 10 percent in China. The efficient Cruze compact and Chevrolet Volt car both hit the market as U.S. gasoline prices started rising.

TOYOTA TROUBLES: Bad publicity from the recalls, mainly for cars that can accelerate without warning, was hurting Toyota long before the earthquake. The recalls began late in 2009, and came just as GM, Ford, Hyundai and others introduced more competitive cars and trucks. With a bunch of nice alternatives and doubts about quality, customers who dutifully returned to Toyota started considering other brands. Despite rebates and low-interest financing, Toyota was the only major automaker with lower U.S. sales last year. Sales are up 12.5 percent so far in 2011, but only at half the growth of GM.

Toyota is scrambling to keep factories open after the earthquake, and U.S. dealers expect to run out of some models. Already dealers are reporting shortages of the Prius gas-electric hybrid, a high-demand model because of gas prices.

Merle Gothard, general manager of North Park Toyota in San Antonio, says he's not worried about GM retaking the title because it still has a tarnished image from bankruptcy.

"It's important from a marketing standpoint," he says. "But Toyota has other things going for it." He notes that Toyota is still profitable and never took a dime of stimulus money from the government.

THE CHINA FACTOR: Toyota has nowhere near GM's presence in China, now the world's largest auto market. Through March, Toyota sold 208,000 vehicles there, but GM and its joint ventures sold more than three times that number. Growth in China by itself probably would have moved GM ahead of Toyota in worldwide sales. Toyota's lead was only about one day's worth of sales for GM.

CAVEATS: Toyota still has a loyal customer base that believes its cars are safe and will last forever. Many Toyotas run for hundreds of thousands of miles with little more than routine maintenance. It also has a reputation for fuel efficiency, led by the Prius.

GM would have to run into major problems to let No. 1 slip away this year. So far it has not been seriously hurt by parts shortages, but if some key electronic components from Japan can't be made elsewhere, the company could run short of models. A new management team also is pushing to speed up introduction of new models, and that could hurt quality.

If GM takes No. 1 this year, it won't crow much, says Jesse Toprak, vice president of industry trends and insights for TrueCar.com, an auto price tracking website.

"It's because of (factory) capacity restrictions, and that's not something they want to brag about," he says.

Lethal Pro v2 review

A name like "Lethal Pro" invariably creates a certain set of expectations. Namely, that the product in question is suitable for professional use, and that it least looks like it's potentially lethal. As you can see, this particular all-purpose tablet / smartphone / camera accessory certainly succeeds on the latter count. But can it do more than just double as a prop in a remake of Runaway? Read on for our full review.

Red Hat's Ceylon language is an unneeded tempest in a teapot

April 22, 2011

Red Hat can't be serious. The leading Linux vendor can't really be planning to develop a brand-new programming language and SDK to compete with Java -- can it?

Apparently it can, although it seems as though Red Hat didn't really want you to know it yet. Instead of the customary press release, Red Hat's announcement came in the form of a pair of presentations by Red Hat engineer and JBoss fellow Gavin King, delivered at the QCon enterprise software conference last week in Beijing. King's slide decks quickly went viral on the Web, however, leaving the broader software development community both intrigued and perplexed.

[ InfoWorld's Paul Krill weighs in on why Ceylon is no Java killer. | See InfoWorld's picks for the top 5 JVM scripting languages. | Keep up with the latest Java techniques with the JavaWorld Enterprise Java newsletter. ]

Intrigued, because King is no dummy. As the creator of the Hibernate Java persistence framework, he knows Java inside and out. So if he says there are fundamental problems with Java that render it inadequate for modern software development, folks tend to listen.

Perplexed, because of all the things Red Hat could be spending its time, energy, and money on, reinventing the wheel -- particularly a wheel as large and complex as Java -- seems like the least helpful, not to mention the least likely to succeed. What on earth is Red Hat thinking?

Ceylon: Java redux
The media was quick to jump on the idea that Red Hat was cooking up a "Java killer," which King was just as quick to deny. Still, the language's name, Ceylon, is itself something of a giveaway. Java and Ceylon are both islands, but while Java is well-known for its coffee, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) is famed for its tea -- get the picture?

That's not to say the Ceylon programming language diverges completely from Java. On the contrary, it relies on the Java runtime environment. Ceylon compiles to Java bytecode, which can then be executed by the JVM of your choice.

Where the languages differ is largely in matters of syntax. Although he was obviously once a fan, King believes Java has failed to keep pace with developments introduced by more modern programming languages, such as C#. He thinks it's high time someone gave the Java language a thorough once-over, throwing out the bad and addressing long-standing failings, such as support for high-order functions and improved type handling. He's done that, and he calls the result Ceylon.

But the Ceylon project aims to do more than just revamp Java's grammar. "Much of our frustration is not even with the Java language itself," writes King. "The extremely outdated class libraries that form the Java SE SDK are riddled with problems. Developing a great SDK is a top priority of the project."

You heard that right: The Ceylon project will produce not just a new language, but a new set of class libraries written in and for that language. There will be no inconsistencies here, no dropping back into Java syntax when you need to use an item from the standard library. Ceylon programs will run on the JVM, but they will be written using 100 percent Ceylon.

Did anybody order a new programming language?
But while such dedication and thoroughness is admirable, it still doesn't answer the obvious question: Why? Or at the very least, why now?

Apple Doubles Q2 Profit Thanks to iPad, iPhone, Mac Sales

Justin Sullivan/Getty Images

Apple's Steve Jobs shows off the iPad 2 earlier this year.

Apple on Wednesday said its fiscal second-quarter profit almost doubled as consumers worldwide snapped up iPads, iPhones and Macintosh computers even as sales of the iconic iPod tumbled.

Apple's results soared past the expectations of analysts, and the stock -- which rose 1% during regular trading to $342.41 -- surged 4% in the after-hours session.

Apple's closing price Wednesday gives the company a market capitalization of $315 billion -- equal to Disney, Time Warner, News Corp., Sony, Viacom, CBS and Comcast combined.

Apple's quarterly profit was $6 billion, up from $3.1 billion in the same quarter a year ago, on revenue that rose 83% to $24.7 billion.

The most notable product of the quarter was the iPhone, which posted sales of 18.7 million, more than twice as many as were sold in the same quarter a year earlier.

The company said it sold 4.7 million iPads during the quarter and 3.8 million Mac computers but only 9 million iPods, down 28% from a year ago.

During a conference call with analysts, COO Tim Cook said "the demand on iPad 2 has been staggering," and he noted the product was "heavily backlogged."

The Apple iTunes store, where consumers buy digital copies of music, TV shows, movies, apps and more, scored $1.4 billion in sales, up 27% from the year-ago quarter.

Cook also addressed analysts' fears that the massive earthquake in Japan would disrupt Apple's supply chain.

"Our preference from the beginning of this tragedy has been to remain with our long-term partners in Japan," he said. "And I have to say they have displayed an incredible resilience that I've personally never seen before in the aftermath of this disaster."

Some data irrecoverable after Amazon Web Services crash

April 26, 2011

By Ted Samson | InfoWorld

Amazon has completed its recovery efforts from the extended crash of its popular cloud-computing services, but there will be lasting damage, both to customer data and to Amazon's reputation.

Amazon has reported on the AWS Service Health Dashboard that it has succeeded in recovering nearly all of the stuck volumes of data in its US-East Region facility, but 0.07 percent of those volumes will not be fully recoverable. The company has not specified how many customers will be impacted, but those whose data can't be retrieved will be frustrated, to say the least. It may also prove further cause for AWS users to reassess their use of the service.

Notably, that 0.07 percent of irrecoverable data represents just a portion of losses that Amazon's customers suffered from the outage. A venture-backed startup called Springpad, for example, saw the Web-based portion of its service go down for hours due to the AWS outage. Springpad offers a free service through which users can store and access all types of information via Web or mobile devices, from appointments and events to product codes and notes, while receiving targeted offers from businesses, such as a discount at a nearby restaurant.

The company's CEO, Jeff Janer, said that AWS stores all of Springpad users' critical data; when the AWS services went down, users were effectively cut off from their daily planners. While users were left frustrated, Springpad itself missed out on signing up new users for nearly two days, not to mention losing lead-driven revenue from its existing ones.

The severity of the outage caught Springpad off guard for a couple of reasons: First, Janere said AWS had been very reliable; previous outages had been far and few in between and hadn't lasted longer than 30 minutes. Second, he said that he didn't anticipate that Amazon would have a single point of failure, "even in one zone that is sitting on multiple clusters."

During the outage, Janer said the company did have the option of transferring older snapshots of user data to another AWS facility, but it would have been a time-consuming endeavor. The company opted to wait and see when Amazon would be able to restore service.

The ordeal has not soured Janer from the cloud; in fact, he attributes the availability of a service such as AWS for Springpad's success: "We're a fast-growing venture-backed company. [The cloud] gives us the ability to scale in real time, to add servers and add capacity. It's been key to our business."

Springpad is, however, is reassessing alternatives to its current relationship with Amazon. Janer said the company could double down and pay extra to have its service hosted simultaneously in Amazon's East Coast and West Coast facilities. It could invest in its own IT gear and collocate in a third-party data center. Another option: It could sign on with an alternative provider like Rackspace. First and foremost, though, Janer said Springpad wants answers from Amazon as to what caused the outage -- which is still being investigated -- and what it will do to prevent it from happening down the road.
