Samsung Unveils New DVD Writers with Ultra Fast Load Times

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a worldwide leader in digital consumer electronics and information technology, today announced the SH-222AB internal DVD writer with fast Lead-In that considerably reduces disc recognition time during start-up. With SAMSUNG?s new DVD writers, consumers will get ultra quick load times, dramatically reducing the wait time from disc insert to usage in the Optical Disc Drives (ODDs).

With Samsung?s new technology, the SH-222AB DVD writer reduces its Lead-In-Time up to 60 percent at maximum. Prior to this, users of traditional DVD-writers had to wait 15 to 30 seconds of load time to start after inserting a disc into the drive. By reducing the lag time, Samsung?s SH-222AB enables a much richer experience for ODD users looking for quick start-up operation

Like previous Samsung ODDs, the SH-222AB is eco-friendly. It features low power consumption and an aerodynamic frame design for low acoustic noise. In addition, SH-222AB is manufactured with lead-free soldering technology in accordance with the RoHS (restriction of hazardous substances directive) that limits use of materials with Pb, cd, cr+6, Hg, PBBs and PBDE.

The SH-222AB internal DVD writer offers a SATA interface for easy connectivity and a variety of speeds across different data media types including: 48X CD-ROM reading, 40X CD-RW reading, 22X DVD?R recording, 12X DVD-RAM recording, 16X DVD+R Dual Layer recording, 8X DVD+RW recording and 6X DVD-RW recording.

Samsung's new DVD writer, SH-222AB, is available in the United States with an MSRP of $29.00.

President Obama made light of the birther controversy at Democratic fundraisers in New York.

If nothing else, Wednesday's unprecedented pushback against birthers by President Obama at the White House gave him a new line to use in opening his fundraising appearances.

At a Democratic fundraiser in the Manhattan apartment of Jon Corzine, former New Jersey governor, Obama said, according to a White House transcript of the event:

So today was a fun day. (Laughter.) I wasn't ? nobody checked my ID at the door. (Laughter.) But it was also a serious day because part of what happened this morning was me trying to remind the press and trying to remind both parties that what we do in politics is not a reality show. It's serious.

?

As if to show how serious it really is, the president turned to the letters he gets from Americans concerned about their futures:

I get, as many of you know, 10 letters a night from citizens all across the country, and the letters you get, some of them are heartbreaking; almost all of them are inspiring. And the story these letters tell are of people who have done everything right, are looking after their families, are looking after their communities, are participating in Little League, are members of their church or their synagogues and active participants, volunteer, and yet are worried. They're worried about the direction of our country. They're worried about their specific circumstances.

Later, at another fundraiser on New York developer Donald Trump's home turf, this time at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, the president again made another lighthearted allusion to the birther controversy.

THE PRESIDENT: Hello, hello, hello! (Applause.) Thank you. Thank you, everybody. (Applause.) Everybody, have a seat. Thank you. Thank you. My name is Barack Obama. I was born in Hawaii. (Laughter and applause.) I'm President of the United States. (Applause.) And I'm running for reelection. (Applause.)

Nobody checked my ID on the way in. (Laughter.) But just in case ? (laughter.)

Then at another fundraiser at Town Hall, the president said:

Are you fired up? Is that what you're saying? (Applause.) I'm fired up, too. My name is Barack Obama. (Applause.) I was born in Hawaii. (Applause.) The 50th state of the United States of America. (Applause.) No one checked my ID on the way in. (Laughter.) But just in case ? (laughter.)

Chris Hemsworth Does ?Interview? Magazine

"I got very comfortable holding it."

Chris Hemsworth will bring Thor to life on the big screen next weekend but this week he is talking to Interview magazine about the film that will likely send his movie career into the stratosphere. In his Interview interview, Hemsworth talks about his role as Thor but poses as a sexy boxer for the accompanying photospread. Check out photos and excerpts from Chris?s Interivew magazine article below.

On Thor?s Hammer: It is a pretty impressive piece of equipment. It was quite heavy, so that helped with the stunts. If it was too light, you would swing it around like a toothpick and it wouldn?t look impressive. When there is some weight to it and you have to physically use your shoulder and back, it gives you a sense of power. I got very comfortable holding it. When I did the earthbound scenes without it, I felt naked.

On keeping Thor?s Hammer: My older brother told me, ?Make sure you keep a hammer,? but I forgot and missed my opportunity. I could sell it on eBay and make a quick buck.

On Thor?s golden locks: It was more of a wig. It wasn?t full scalp, but the majority. There were sections on the sides of my scalp where it was my hair amongst it.

On the Thor comic books and mythology: I knew about the character, but I never read the comics as a kid. Getting involved in the film was my introduction to it. Then I was inundated with many copies of Thor comics?the guys at Marvel gave me a stack. I also read a lot of books on Norse mythology.

The full online version of this interview can be read HERE and the lovely glossy photos can be seen in the print version of Interview which hits stands on May 3. We?ve spent many months talking about this film ? and now we find ourselves very close to its release. I?ve been impressed, thus far, with everything I?ve seen from the film ? I just hope the final product does the God of Thunder justice.

Pakistan Gives U.S. Generals the Silent Treatment After Osama Raid

Something you don?t want to hear right after a raid kills Osama bin Laden: the Pakistani military suddenly going dark to its U.S. counterparts on the porous border with Afghanistan. But that?s exactly what the U.S. general in charge of eastern Afghanistan had to deal with last week.

For two whole days after the raid, ?we didn?t have very good contact? with the Pakistani military, said Maj. Gen. John Campbell, the commander of U.S. troops in eastern Afghanistan.

That?s a big deal. Campbell?s soldiers have to safeguard some 450 miles of border with the Pakistan, an easy transit point for insurgents, terrorists and their logistics. That can?t happen without the aid of the Pakistani military on the other side. The raid became international news within hours. Even before al-Qaida confirmed bin Laden?s death, al-Qaida operatives would have had an opportunity to disperse ? possibly across the border.

Campbell, speaking to Pentagon reporters from Bagram Air Field, didn?t say he observed any increased border crossings in the wake of the raid. And on Sunday, one of his brigade commanders reported that he had reestablished good relations with the Pakistanis. At the ?tactical, operational level,? Campbell said, the U.S.-Pakistani relationship on the border ?in the last two months is the best we?ve ever seen.?

He notably didn?t say anything about the strategic level. That?s because the brief border blackout looks like the latest sign of a deteriorating relationship with Pakistan.

Over the weekend, Pakistani media reported the name of the top CIA official in the country ? the second such leak in five months. Pakistan?s prime minister gave a heated speech to parliament on Monday praising the Inter-Services Intelligence agency, which many in the U.S. believe either sheltered bin Laden or proved woefully incompetent in finding him. That followed on the military?s own declamation of responsibility for bin Laden?s presence in the same city that hosts its military academy.

The CIA wouldn?t comment about the leak of its station chief?s identity. But a U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, tells Danger Room that ?instead of expending so much energy criticizing the United States, they should channel that energy into a renewed focus on thwarting terrorists who are living on Pakistani soil.?

Haider Mullick, a Pakistani military expert who?s also a fellow at the?Joint Special Operations University, guesses that Campbell?s Pakistani counterpart, Lt. Gen.?Asif Yasin Malik of the 11th Corps, ?stopped talking to John because he was asked to? by the top Pakistani brass. It?s likely Malik?s orders were to ?ignore?Campbell, find out what the hell happened? with the raid; ?deal with the chaos? it created inside Pakistan?s security sector; or, potentially, prepare to ?stop a second run? by U.S. troops, Mullick says.

U.S. raids into Pakistan always cause a local row over sovereignty. In October, U.S. helicopters accidentally killed two Pakistani soldiers while pursuing insurgents fleeing from Afghanistan. That caused the Pakistanis to briefly shut the border to NATO logistics convoys. And the bin Laden assault is the mother of all cross-border raids.

But Mullick thinks the relationship is already starting to turn around. Pakistan has launched an inquiry into bin Laden?s support network inside the country, and is allowing the U.S. to question bin Laden?s wives. All that strikes Mullick as a face-saving climbdown from the acrimony between the two frenemies.

For his part, Campbell, who returns home to the U.S. next week, doesn?t see bin Laden?s death changing the security picture in eastern Afghanistan. ?One man does not make this war on terror,? he told reporters. ?In the short term, we have not seen his death make a major impact? They?ll find someone to replace him.? Campbell held out hope that the death will compel insurgents to quit fighting. But he marveled at the ?uncanny ability? of al-Qaida?s allies in the Haqqani network, who operate on both sides of the border, to ?regenerate forces? after U.S. troops cut them down.

Haqqani, not al-Qaida, is ?the most lethal threat? to eastern Afghanistan, Campbell said. Unless cooperation with the Pakistani military gets more consistent, it?s likely to remain that way.

FlyNano plane is super-light, pretty cheap, a little scary

Since the dawn of time, man has dreamed of soaring through the clouds, without invasive TSA security checks and having the guy next to him fall asleep on his shoulder, drooling. FlyNano debuted three new planes at last week's Aero 2011 show in Friedrichshafen, Germany, which it hopes will deliver that very dream. Thanks to a composite carbon fiber bodies and a sub-44 pound drive trains, each weighs less than 154 pounds, hitting the FAA definition for an ultralight vehicle and forgoing the need for a pilot's license. But, while the company is pitching these electric-powered propeller vehicles as flyable straight out of the box, the things are still subject to FAA regulations, so don't expect to go joyriding near a major airport anytime soon -- and then there's the "theoretical operational distance" of 40 miles to contend with. Pricing ranges from €25,000 to €27,000 ($36,380 to $39,290) and the company claims that they'll start shipping in three months, plenty of time to get your life insurance premiums paid up.

[Thanks, Jani]

Jeremy Renner Firming Up Starring Role in 'The Bourne Legacy'

Jason Merritt/Getty Images

There's barely enough Jeremy Renner to go around.

The Hurt Locker star, who was also Oscar nominated for his work in The Town last year, has been handed an offer for the starring role in Tony Gilroy's The Bourne Legacy. Gilroy, who wrote or co-wrote the first three films in Universal's Bourne saga, has been testing actors for the last few weeks to play a brand new lead character distinct from Matt Damon's Jason Bourne (Damon isn't returning). But Renner is the guy everybody wants right now.

The problem, as always, is scheduling. It took a while to work out his ability to star in Paramount's Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, which he's shooting now for a March release. That followed filming his role in Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, also for Paramount, which hits theaters in December.

Then there's the little movie The Avengers, in which he plays Hawkeye for Marvel Studios and Disney. That comes out in May next year, but audiences will get a sneak peek at him in Thor, which Paramount hammers into theaters in two weeks to kick off the summer. Avengers starts shooting soon and will continue filming into August and September with Joss Whedon at the helm and a slew of other superheroes on set.

But Renner had been considering starring opposite Eric Bana in?Sheldon Turner's revenge thriller?By Virtue Fall?in the fall. It's a project Renner has been flirting with for most of the last year. Now it looks like he will instead jump from Avengers right into his third?(!!) potential franchise with Bourne, then shoot Virtue after the New Year.

Given his packed schedule, Renner, who's repped by CAA and Untitled, may need to be superhuman after all.

Meet Power Matt, Powermat's new pun-based superhero ready to answer your tech questions (updated)

The biggest problem with modern society? A lack of good super villains. Seriously, today's superheroes are getting flabby from sitting around, twiddling their powerful thumbs. Look at poor Power Matt here -- dude's clearly been working out and doing his shopping at the Justice League department store. So what is he doing with his time? Foiling bank heists or intercepting speeding missiles? Nope. He's Powermat's new mascot, and he's fielding questions about the inductive charging pad on the company's Twitter account. Can someone please help the poor redheaded hero out and kidnap a world leader or something? Or at least steal their microUSB cable?

Update: Ah, so according to reader Virginia Comicon, turns out this image is, ahem, inspired by the cover of Superman issue 233. Check out the comparison after the break.
