Fanny Wang lets you make your headphones as ugly as you want

Making it big in the headphone industry isn't always about sound quality, sometimes you just have to be loud. The folks at Fanny Wang have that covered, offering up some wildly colored cans to help them "break through the noise," as they put it, of the headphone market. Users can customize the outfit's 1001, 2001 and 3001 model headphones on the firm's new interactive website, picking and choosing colors for seven distinct parts, including the cord. Orders take about three weeks to assemble and ship, Fanny says, giving you just enough time to snag some colorful cans before the holidays. You know, in case someone on your list is looking for something sort of like those ColorWare tinted Beats, but with a bit of actual color. You can find Fanny's fancy press release after the break.

Yes, You Can Install the Nook App on a Kindle Fire [EXCLUSIVE] (Mashable)

Although Amazon goes out of its way to hide all traces of vanilla Android from its new Kindle Fire tablet, it turns out tech-savvy users can still install select third-party Android applications outside the auspices of the Amazon Appstore. These apps include Amazon competitors, like Barnes & Noble's Nook app for Android. Perusing through the settings of our Kindle Fire review unit, I came across an interesting line item. Under the settings section labeled "Device," there is an option that says "Allow Installation of Applications From Unknown Sources." Now, this is a common setting on most Android devices, but Amazon was clear with me at the launch event that the device would not support Google's Android Market. I assumed that meant that no third-party app downloads would be supported.

[More from Mashable: YouTube Upgrades Its Android App]

It turns out, some third party apps and third-party app stores are accessible from the Kindle Fire. After enabling installation from unknown sources, I headed to my favorite non-corporate Android app store, GetJar.

GetJar doesn't list the Kindle Fire in its device listing, so I chose another Android 2.3 device and then followed the instructions to download the GetJar.apk from GetJar's mobile site. Once downloaded, I installed the app.

[More from Mashable: Myxer Launches Free Social Radio App [VIDEO]]

The app appears in the app shelf alongside the standard Amazon Appstore apps.

After installing the GetJar app, I went on my merry way installing various third-party apps. Some apps would simply redirect to an entry in the Amazon Appstore. Other would refuse to download.

Still, a number of apps installed without any problem -- including the Barnes & Noble Nook app for Android. The awesomeness of running the Nook app on the Kindle is partially a novelty, sure, but it actually adds quite a bit of value to the device.

Third-party apps via GetJar are still hit or miss on the Kindle Fire, so your mileage may vary. Still, this development indicates that perhaps Amazon hasn't locked down the ecosystem quite as much as we previously expected.

Health Tip: Make Your Garage Safer (HealthDay)

(HealthDay News) -- The garage can be a prime spot for falls, accidents and injuries. But the U.S. Home Safety Council suggests how you can create a safer garage:

  • Keep the floor and stairs clear of clutter, with good lighting throughout the garage.
  • On any shelving, store heavier items closer to the ground.
  • Install child-proof safety locks on any working refrigerators or freezers. If they don't work, remove the doors.
  • Store any electrical tools or sharp tools out of the reach of children.
  • Make sure all stairs have handrails, with bright lighting at the top and bottom.
  • Clean up grease and other spills as they occur.
  • Make sure the garage door has an auto-reverse feature, and test it to be sure it works properly.

Ex-porn star reading to LA students causes stir (AP)

COMPTON, Calif. ? Some parents have filed complaints with the Parent-Teacher Association after a former adult film star said she read to children in a classroom at a Los Angeles County elementary school.

Sasha Grey, a 23-year-old ex-porn actress who has appeared in mainstream shows like HBO's "Entourage," was a guest earlier this month at Compton's Emerson Elementary School for Read Across America Day.

Grey tweeted Nov. 2 that she spent the day reading to students in the first and third grades.

KTLA-TV ( http://bit.ly/uZ5zY8) quoted parents questioning whether it was appropriate to have Grey at the school. Parent Dudley Wheaton wondered why the school couldn't find a fireman or a police officer to read to students.

Grey has not appeared in porn films in over two years. She has been a regular on "Entourage" and appeared in the 2009 film "The Girlfriend Experience."

Airline fined $900,000 for lengthy tarmac delays (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Department of Transportation said Monday it has fined a regional affiliate of American Airlines $900,000 for keeping hundreds of passengers cooped up for hours on planes in Chicago earlier this year, a clear warning to airlines on the eve of the holiday travel season that similar incidents won't be tolerated.

American Eagle Airlines had tarmac delays of more than three hours on 15 flights arriving at O'Hare International Airport on May 29, the department said in a statement. A total of 608 passengers were aboard the delayed flights.

The airline must pay $650,000 of the fine within 30 days, the department said. But up to $250,000 can be credited for refunds, vouchers, and frequent flyer mile awards provided to the passengers on the 15 flights, as well as to passengers on future flights that violate the three-hour rule, the department said.

The department implemented a new rule in April 2010 limiting tarmac delays on domestic flights to three hours. After that, airlines must either return to a gate or provide passengers who wish to leave planes with some other means of safely getting off. Airlines that violate the rule can be fined as much as $27,500 per passenger.

The rule has since been extended to international flight delays, which are capped at four hours.

"We put the tarmac rule in place to protect passengers, and we take any violation very seriously," Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a statement. "We will work to ensure that airlines and airports coordinate their resources and plans to avoid keeping passengers delayed on the tarmac."

American Eagle blamed the delays on airport congestion caused by a slow-moving weather system. The airline said it has apologized to passengers and provided either travel vouchers or frequent flyer program mileage credit.

"We take our responsibility to comply with all of the department's requirements very seriously and have already put in place processes to avoid such an occurrence in the future," American Eagle President and CEO Dan Garton said in a statement.

American and American Eagle are owned by AMR Corp. of Fort Worth, Tex. AMR is in the process of spinning off American Eagle into a separate company.

The airline is the first to be fined for violating the three-hour rule since it took effect 20 months ago. The fine also represents the largest penalty to be paid by an airline in a consumer protection case not involving civil rights violations, although airlines have paid much higher fines for violating federal safety regulations.

The rule was prompted by a series of incidents in which passengers complained of being kept virtual prisoners on planes in sight of an airport terminal. In one famous incident on Valentine's Day 2007, snow and ice in the northeast led to JetBlue Airways stranding hundreds of passengers on 10 planes on the tarmac at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport for up to 10 1/2 hours.

In August 2009, 47 people were stuck overnight aboard a cramped Continental Express plane with a stinking toilet and crying babies after an employee for another airline refused to let them inside a closed airport terminal in Rochester, Minn., where the plane was diverted due to thunderstorms.

LaHood has hailed the three-hour delay rule as a success. Between May 2010 and April 2011, the first 12 months after the time limit was in effect, airlines reported 20 tarmac delays of more than three hours, none of which was more than four hours long. In contrast, during the 12 months before the rule took effect, airlines had 693 tarmac delays of more than three hours, and 105 of the delays were longer than four hours

But airlines, which opposed the three-hour limit, say passengers have paid a price. In order to avoid steep fines, airlines are more likely now to cancel flights than risk a fine by pushing up against the three-hour limit to see if they can get passengers to their destination.

A recent Government Accountability Office report confirmed that has been the case: "As our analysis has shown, the rule appears to be associated with an increased number of cancellations for thousands of additional passengers ? far more than DOT initially predicted ? including some who might not have experienced a tarmac delay."

And lengthy delays haven't entirely disappeared. A freak October snow storm and trouble with landing guidance systems at two New York-area airports recently caused more than 20 flights to be diverted to Bradley International Airport in Hartford, Conn., overwhelming the smaller airport. Passengers on at least three JetBlue planes and an American Airlines plane were stranded on the tarmac for seven hours or more.

The captain of one of the JetBlue flights could be heard pleading over his radio with authorities for help getting passengers, some of whom were becoming unruly, off the plane. The ordeal continued after they were eventually let off and had to spend the night on cots and chairs in terminals.

PFT: Falcons' Smith made right call, but it backfired

New England Patriots linebacker Rob Ninkovich is congratulated by teammate Niko Koutouvides and head coach Bill Belichick after Ninkovich returned an interception for a touchdown against the New York Jets during the fourth quarter of their NFLReuters

The Jets talked all offseason about winning the division and getting a home playoff game.

After Sunday night?s performance, it looks like they?ll have to win on the road in the playoffs once again ? if they make it.

New England?s 37-16 win over the Jets was so disheartening for the Jets in so many ways.

Mark Sanchez and the Jets offense could not take advantage of a poor Patriots secondary that lost two starters (again) Sunday night. ?The Jets defense played well for a while, but could not get a stop when they needed to in the second half. Even the vaunted Jets special teams made a big miscue.

New York led 9-6 with just over one minute left in the first half. ?The ?stupidest play in football history? turned the tide. What happened after that was a full system meltdown:

1. Tom Brady led the Patriots 80 yards in 71 seconds to score before halftime.

2. Donald Strickland fumbled a punt early in the second half to set up a Patriots field goal.

3. Mark Sanchez was picked off on a tipped pass by Rob Ninkovich. ?The Jets defense didn?t get a stop again until the game was decided.

4. Tom Brady put the Patriots in a hurry up for the rest of the half. The Jets couldn?t substitute and Brady kept finding the open receiver. After a shaky first half with missed throws, Brady wound up with 329 yards on 39 attempts with three scores.

5. Rob Gronkowski scored two touchdowns and gained 113 yards. He?s the best all-around tight end in football right now.

Even when Sanchez finished off a touchdown drive early in the fourth quarter, the Patriots drove right back on them with ease. Ninkovich?s pick six finished off the scoring.

The Jets now trail the Patriots in the AFC East by one game, but the Patriots have the tiebreaker following their two-game sweep. ?The Patriots should win the division.

After a very challenging schedule to start the year, New England faces six straight losing teams. ?No game is guaranteed considering the Patriots? wildly thin defense, but Bill Belichick is nothing if not resourceful. They should get the job done.

The Jets find themselves in a familiar position, fighting uphill once again. They will likely have to go on the road to win the playoffs.

They must wonder if Mark Sanchez will ever be ready to make a bad defense pay.

He wasn?t ready Sunday night, which means the changing of the guard in the AFC East will have to wait another year.

The odd couples: Unlikely, shocking and just plain weird pairings

When the WWE Universe learned The Rock would pair with John Cena at Survivor Series, questions swirled if they could possibly co-exist. After closer inspection, the unlikely pairing wasn't such a crazy idea after all (WHY ROCK AND CENA MAKE A GREAT TEAM).

However, before The Rock and Cena team up on Nov. 20, WWE.com looks back at some of the couplings in history that are indeed odd.

Jericho-Rock

?Chris Jericho & The Rock
Jericho & The Rock, side-by-side? Just one night prior to teaming together, Jericho had defeated the Brahma Bull for the WCW Championship. But as WCW & ECW invaded WWE, the two put aside their differences to capture the World Tag Team Titles. Shortly after losing them, though, the rivalry started up again for the WCW Championship.

Bennett-GagaTony Bennett & Lady Gaga
If you told us a Vegas crooner in his mid-80s could make beautiful music with the ?Poker Face? vamp who once wore a dress made of meat, we?d have to wonder if your head had been recently paired with multiple turnbuckles. But when you hear this doubtful duo belt out ?The Lady is a Tramp,? you cast all aspersions aside ? at least those about Bennett.

Shawn-AustinShawn Michaels & "Stone Cold" Steve Austin

Bitter rivals through most of their careers in WWE, "Stone Cold" and HBK put aside their differences in 1997 and won the World Tag Team Titles. Nine months after losing them, the on-again, off-again tandem was off for good, as Austin challenged Michaels for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania XIV.

Felix-OscarFelix & Oscar
Be it Randall & Klugman, Lemmon & Mathau or Broderick & Lane (forget Glass & Wilson; they were terrible), Neil Simon's saga of a neat-freak and a slob trying to share an apartment without driving each other crazy is the hands-down champion of tag team comedy.

Booker-GoldustBooker T & Goldust

Long before he reigned as King Booker, the former World Champion teamed with Goldust to form one of the most memorable tandems in WWE history. Their barking banter out of the ring was as smooth as their in-ring chemistry, leading to one reign as World Tag Team Champions. Now, can you dig THAT, Suckaaaa!

Peanut butter cupsReese's Peanut Butter Cups
Chocolate and peanut butter? Two great tastes, tasting great together? Who knew?

?

?

Love-AustinDude Love & "Stone Cold" Steve Austin
When Mankind attempted to team with ?Stone Cold? and challenge for the World Tag Team Titles, The Rattlesnake refused, opting to go alone into his match. So, out of Mick Foley's past came the coolest dude with attitude, Dude Love! Austin & Dude Love won the titles, and the era of the Dude in WWE was born. Have Mercy!

SpockSpock & Kirk
One rejects human emotion and employs unbridled logic in his decisions. The other commands purely on gut instinct and hammy dialogue. Together, though, they are the galaxy?s best line of defense against those that threaten it in the 23rd Century. So long as they don?t start comparing their mating rituals or success rate, they?ll get along just fine.

Hart-GoldbergBret Hart & Bill Goldberg
This combination goes down as one of the most baffling in sports-entertainment history. Bret defeated Goldberg for the U.S. Title. Goldberg challenged Bret for the WCW Heavyweight Championship. In between occurrences, they teamed to win tag team gold. And it gets weirder: Goldberg caused Bret Hart's career-ending injury. He screwed Bret!

Rocky-ApolloRocky Balboa & Apollo Creed
They had two epic battles in the ring which crowned Rocky as boxing's Heavyweight Champion. (see, "Yo Adrian, I did it!") But nobody could have predicted Apollo training the "Italian Stallion" for his rematch with Clubber Lang in Rocky III.

Mankind-KaneMankind & Kane
Both Superstars were crazy about dishing out punishment, but each in a different way. While Kane loved to inflict pain on others, Mankind's pleasure came from self-mutilation. Together, however, they were a formidable double creature-feature, and they captured the World Tag Team Championship by defeating the New Age Outlaws.

Ranger-TontoThe Lone Ranger & Tonto
In the Old West, a masked cowboy and a Native American riding side-by-side to the "William Tell Overture" just wasn't natural. But nothing could stop these crime-fighting kimosabes from hunting down outlaws in those thrilling days of yesteryear. Hi-yo, Silver!?

Shawn - CenaShawn Michaels & John Cena
Michaels & Cena?became World Tag Team Champions while?opposing each other?on the Road to WrestleMania 23.?They had each other's backs, at least for a short while. But this powder keg blew up big-time on Raw a day after their WrestleMania bout, when HBK's Sweet Chin Music to the WWE Champion cost them the tag titles.

BoggsWade Boggs & The 1996 New York Yankees
Long before he inducted "Mr. Perfect" Curt Hennig into the WWE Hall of Fame, Boggs himself had a Hall of Fame career in baseball. After most of his career was spent living with the "Curse of the Bambino" as a Red Sox, Beantown fans groaned for about 8 years as Boggs celebrated his first (and only) World Series ring as a Bronx Bomber.

MVP & Matt HardyMVP & Matt Hardy
MVP was all about "ballin'" - and bawlin' about Matt Hardy's bid to capture his United States Title. He thought that might change when he and Hardy were forced into a WWE Tag Team Title Match - and won. It didn't. This diametric duo spent months as champions, but Matt never gave up on taking the U.S. Title from MVP (and eventually did).

Devito-ArnoldDanny DeVito & Arnold Schwarzenegger
In the 1988 movie Twins, the former Governor of California teamed with legendary comic Danny DeVito to form an unlikely tandem. Arnold's "Julius" was the goody-good to DeVito's career criminal "Vince." Against all odds, they muscled their way up to the top of the box office. Girly Man!

Mankind-RockMankind & The Rock

Affectionately known as "The Rock 'N' Sock Connection," our fans worldwide loved the pairing of Mankind & The Rock. They defeated Undertaker & Big Show to capture the World Tag Team Championship, but the real gold came when Mankind presented The Rock with "Mr. Rocko," a jacket and a trip down memory lane ? Have a Nice Day!

Salt-PepperSalt & Pepper
Not since oil & vinegar have confectionary goods had at it this much. For centuries, these granular gladiators have stared each other down on kitchen tables everywhere, yet they still somehow manage to condiment ? oops, compliment each other. They also performed at WrestleMania XI?? wait, that was Salt-N-Pepa.?
