HBT: Ramirez still hesitant about move to 3rd

The Marlins have repeatedly said that they have no intention to trade Hanley Ramirez following the addition of shortstop Jose Reyes, but it?s clear that he?s not yet on board with moving to third base.

Marlins president Larry Beinfest made some interesting comments to?Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald yesterday, admitting?that??it may take a little bit of time for him to get comfortable? with the idea of switching positions.

?The conversations we?ve had, we?re going to keep between us. But there?s been quite a bit of communication. He?s excited about playing for Ozzie Guillen. Ozzie is excited to have him. Everyone reacts to change differently.

?Even though we communicated with him and let him know what our intentions were in terms of Jose, he was the shortstop for six years, a very good one. We?ve asked him to move to third. Sometimes it just takes a little time for things to sink in. I think he recognizes we?re a better team with Jose.?

Another Marlins? official told Jackson that they would like Ramirez to publicly endorse the signing of Reyes and a move to third base, but they haven?t pressured him to do so. The hope is that he?ll come around to the idea before spring training, but if the Marlins continue to face resistance, it stands to reason that they?ll explore the possibility of trading him.

Howard Stern joins 'America's Got Talent'

Radio personality Howard Stern is joining "America's Got Talent."

By Ree Hines

Shortly after the first rumors surfaced about the possibility of Howard Stern joining "America's Got Talent," the self-proclaimed King of All Media predicted that he'd outperform past panelist David Hasselhoff. While few Stern fans could doubt that, he'll soon have a chance to prove it "Got Talent" viewers.

On Thursday morning, NBC announced that it's official: Stern will get a spot on the panel.

(FYI: TODAY.com is powered by msnbc.com, which is a joint venture between Microsoft and NBC Universal.)

Paul Telegdy, president of alternative and late night programming for NBC, said "Howard Stern?s larger-than-life personality will bring a thrilling new dynamic to ?America?s Got Talent? starting this summer. He?s a proven innovator and his track record in broadcasting is truly remarkable. Howard is very passionate about this show and is fully committed to its future success.?

Stern will be stepping in to replace for "Got Talent" judge Piers Morgan, who decided the reality TV competition was just too much to juggle with his CNN show.

On Stern's Thursday morning Sirius XM radio show, the shock jock confirmed the news. The show's official Twitter feed has since featured updates.

"Howard says he'll start shooting in February and actually be traveling the country to do the audition rounds. ?#H100 ?#AGT," one update read.

But once those auditions are over, Stern won't have to worry about hitting the road for the regular rounds. Production of the live show will travel to him, in New York.

What do you think of the big announcement? Will Stern be a good fit for the show? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

Verizon pushes for quick Windows Phone / LTE integration, tugs at Microsoft's pant leg

There's no question that Verizon's making a big push for LTE, but it appears that Microsoft has yet to take notice -- after all, Android continues to dominate Big Red's 4G network, with nary a Windows Phone in sight. VZW hopes that'll change, however, with CMO Marni Walden revealing that the company has "communicated to Microsoft that LTE is critical to us," suggesting that the ball is in Windows Phone's court. Meanwhile, Microsoft smartphone chief Andy Lees had previously confirmed that LTE functionality was on the Windows Phone roadmap, saying back in October that the company and its partners were looking at how 4G LTE support could be integrated. To date, Lees has declined to give any indication as to the actual timing for the first LTE models. In other news, Verizon has offered Microsoft a custom-made promise ring just to make sure its intentions were understood.

Another body possibly linked to Craigslist ad identified (Reuters)

CLEVELAND (Reuters) ? A body which may be connected to a phony Craigslist job listing that investigators suspect is behind a deadly crime spree in Ohio was identified on Saturday as 56-year old Ralph H. Geiger.

The body of Geiger, whose last known address was Akron, Ohio, was the third found in Ohio possibly linked to the Craigslist ad.

Authorities believe there is a link after a South Carolina man, Scott Davis, survived a shooting attack in rural Noble County, Ohio on November 6 when he answered an ad looking for a ranch hand. Davis was shot while running away from two men he met when he responded to the ad.

One of the three bodies was found in a shallow grave on November 15 near where Davis was shot, identified as David Pauley, 51, of Norfolk, Virginia. A second body was found in a shallow grave on November 25 behind a semi-deserted mall in Akron, Ohio.

The third body, Geiger, was also discovered on November 25. A coroner's report released on Saturday said Geiger died of a gunshot to the head. No date of death was given but the report said the body was moderately decomposed. Geiger's family was notified.

After Davis survived the attack, 16-year-old Brogan Rafferty was arrested and charged with attempted murder and murder in juvenile court. His next hearing is December 15.

Another man named by the FBI as a suspect in the shooting, Richard J. Beasley, 52, is in prison in Summit County, Ohio on unrelated drug and prostitution charges.

The phony ad was posted on Craigslist October 7 and offered $300 a week to "simply watch over a 688 acre patch of hilly farmland."

The case is under a gag order issued from a judge in Noble County, Ohio but the sheriff's office said they found Geiger's grave site through the ongoing investigation.

There have been several instances in recent years of attackers allegedly finding victims through postings on the classified ad website Craigslist.

In 2009, a former medical student was accused of killing a masseuse he met through Craigslist, and police have been hunting for at least one serial killer in the New York area thought to prey on prostitutes who advertised on the site.

Minn. GOP Party Elects Kelly Fenton Deputy Chair

nullThe state Republican party has elected Kelly Fenton its new deputy chair. In that role she'll also serve as the interim state party chair, following the previous chairman's abrupt resignation Friday.

Fenton was elected Saturday in Bloomington by delegates to the Republican State Central Committee Meeting.

She takes over the term of former Deputy Chair Michael Brodkorb, which expires in April 2013. Brodkorb resigned in October to advise the congressional campaign of state Sen. Mike Parry.

As deputy chair, Fenton will temporarily serve as party chair after former chairman Tony Sutton resigned Friday. The party's constitution calls for a full-time replacement to be elected within 30 days.

Fenton says the circumstance may have changed since she first decided to run for deputy chair, but the objectives remain the same.

Congress could intervene to stop railroad strike (AP)

WASHINGTON ? A costly railroad strike is looming just in time to scare Christmas-season retailers unless the nation's freight railroads and labor unions resolve their differences by Tuesday. Congress could intervene as early as Friday to avert a shutdown.

House lawmakers said Thursday they hope the parties will agree to extend the negotiation period for another 60 days. If not, House GOP leaders intend to bring up for a vote Friday a bill to block a strike, said Rep. Bill Shuster, R-Pa., chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure rail subcommittee.

The bill would impose the settlement recommendations of a five-member Presidential Emergency Board that would bind the parties for the next three years. It is not clear whether Democratic leaders in the Senate ? generally more sympathetic to unions ? would go along with that, or seek another option such as extending the talks.

A strike of any length could cause massive disruption to the economy. Retailers say a rail strike would cost businesses and consumers $2 billion a day and prove especially damaging during the industry's most important shopping season of the year.

It would not only affect the delivery of goods but could also impact thousands of commuters if passenger trains are unable to travel on freight tracks.

"A strike during the busy holiday shopping season could be devastating," Matthew Shay, president and CEO of the National Retail Federation, said in a letter to Congress.

The last time a railroad strike occurred, in 1991, Congress quickly passed legislation that ended it within a day. A 1982 strike lasted four days.

President Barack Obama appointed the special board in October to mediate the dispute between more than 30 railroads and 13 unions. The White House action averted a strike for at least 60 days until a "cooling off" period ends Tuesday at 12:01 a.m.

The railroads, including Union Pacific Corp., CSX Corp. and Burlington Northern Santa Fe, have reached agreements on wages and benefits with 10 of the 13 unions covering about 60 percent of the 132,000 workers bargaining.

The remaining three are the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees and the American Train Dispatchers Association, representing about 60,000 workers.

Roland Wilder, attorney for both the engineers and maintenance unions, said he was hopeful a deal could be reached before the deadline, or that an extension could be worked out.

But even a strike by just three unions would cripple railroad commerce.

"In the railroad industry, all organizations honor the picket lines of other unions," Wilder said.

One of the thorniest issues, Wilder said, is a request by some unions for higher reimbursement for lodging and meal expenses for rail employees who are almost constantly working away from home.

The Republican leaders of the House ? Speaker John Boehner, Majority Leader Eric Cantor and Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy ? vowed earlier this week to vote on legislation that would prevent a strike if the parties fail to reach an agreement by the deadline.

"We are following with concern the situation involving our nation's railways, and we are troubled by the possibility of a national railway strike that would jeopardize American jobs and cost our nation's economy an estimated $2 billion per day," the lawmakers said in a statement.

Joanna Moorhead, spokeswoman for the National Railway Labor Conference, which represents the railroads in bargaining talks, said railroads are not eager to extend negotiations beyond the deadline.

"What we're focusing on now is not a postponement, but getting an agreement," Moorhead said.

Sandy Kennedy, president of the Retail Industry Leaders Association, warned in a letter to Obama on Thursday that a railroad strike would force retailers to shift the delivery of goods to trucks, increasing costs, delivery time and congestion on roadways.

"This means that the Christmas shopping season could be severely affected as products destined for stores sit idle at ports or in traffic," Kennedy said.
