The right recipe: Engineering research improves laser detectors, batteries

Monday, February 6, 2012

Think of it as cooking with carbon spaghetti: A Kansas State University researcher is developing new ways to create and work with carbon nanotubes -- ultrasmall tubes that look like pieces of spaghetti or string.

These carbon nanotubes -- made of graphene, an atom-thick sheet of carbon -- have the perfect ingredients for improving laser detectors and rechargeable batteries, according to research by Gurpreet Singh, assistant professor of mechanical and nuclear engineering. Singh is working on several projects with carbon nanotubes and polymer-derived ceramic material.

One project involves new ways to cook or create a ceramic carbon nanotube material. The conventional way to make this type of material is to take a liquid polymer, pour it into a mold and heat it in an oven until the polymer forms a ceramic.

Singh's team tried a new approach. They are among the first to create their own modified liquid polymer with four ingredients: silicon, boron, carbon and nitrogen. But rather than heating this liquid polymer in an oven, they heated it in a conventional microwave -- the kind used in kitchens. They found that the microwave heats the nanotubes just as well as an oven.

"What we did is reduce the time to construct ceramic," Singh said. "If you use an oven or heater, you have to heat it for awhile. With the microwave, it is fast heating within a few minutes."

Their work -- co-authored with their university colleague William Kuhn, professor of electrical and computer engineering -- recently appeared in the journal Applied Materials and Interfaces, published by the American Chemical Society. Another publication involving conventional processing will appear in the Journal of the American Ceramic Society.

Once this ceramic carbon nanotube material is created, it has multiple applications. Singh's team is involved in a project with the Laser Radiometry Team at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, or NIST, in Boulder, Colo., which works to develop measurement methods for high-power industrial lasers for manufacturing.

Singh's team is assisting the institute in improving how laser power is measured. Currently, laser measurements involve a cone-shaped copper detector covered in carbon paint. The laser shines through the cone, is absorbed by the black paint, heats the copper cone and then heats a waterfall at the detector's back end. By measuring the rising temperature of the water, scientists can determine the energy of the laser.

The Singh team has improved this process by making the cone-shaped detector out of the ceramic carbon nanotube composite material. Because ceramic can withstand high temperatures, it protects the nanotubes, which absorb the laser light to heat the cone.

"We are checking the stability of the material," Singh said. "We are characterizing it and then sending the samples to the NIST to test."

Another project for Singh's team uses the ceramic carbon nanotube material to improve the performance of rechargeable batteries. The material addresses four ways that rechargeable batteries can be improved: having a larger storage capacity, having a longer battery life, recharging quickly and providing a lot of power in a short amount of time.

These ceramic materials can reversibly store lithium, meaning that lithium can go in and come out of it. Current rechargeable batteries use graphite to store lithium. But as the graphite wears down, a battery become less efficient and will stay charged for a shorter amount of time.

The ability to recharge quickly and provide a lot of power in a short amount of time is especially key for electric cars. Many current electric car designs take several hours to recharge and take a long time to accelerate. Scientists wanting to create a battery that can recharge in a few minutes and provide power quickly may now have a solution.

Singh's team has already seen early success with their work: Preliminary research shows that when the ceramic material is used in batteries, it doubles or triples the battery's capacity for high current. The material is also thermodynamically stabile, so it can survive longer cycles.

"It would be really nice to have one material that has high capacity, can be charged quickly and also is stable," Singh said. "With this ceramic material, it should be strong enough so that over time it does not degrade. That's the ultimate goal."

Their battery work will appear later this year in the journal Nanomaterials and Energy, published by the Institution of Civil Engineers. The researchers are currently charging and recharging the batteries for several cycles to understand how long the batteries made from the materials can last.

A final project from Singh's team involves the use of "nano-fingers," which are sharp tungsten needles that can probe and pick up carbon nanotubes. The researchers use these nano-fingers under an electron microscope to perform studies with individual carbon nanotubes and ceramic nanowires.

Singh's research has been supported with $57,000 from the EPSCoR program with the National Science Foundation. His research team consists of two graduate students -- Romil Bhandavat and Lamuel David, both doctoral students in mechanical engineering, India,-- and one undergraduate student, Uriel Barrera, a sophomore in mechanical engineering, Olathe.

Mushroom pickers lost hope, considered eating dog (AP)

GOLD BEACH, Ore. ? Dan Conne says he and his wife and son thought they were going to die after getting lost while picking mushrooms and spending nearly a week in the rugged forest of southwest Oregon.

They spent the nights huddled in a hollow log and considered sacrificing their pit bull, Jesse, for food.

"She's that good a dog, she'd have done it, too," Conne said.

But help finally arrived Saturday when a volunteer helicopter pilot decided to look outside the search area and spotted the family ? Dan, his wife, Belinda, and their 25-year-old son, Michael ? on the edge of a deep ravine in tall timber. The three were about 10 miles from the town of Gold Beach, roughly 330 miles south-southwest of Portland.

"The searchers were with us within 20 minutes of the first copter that found us," Dan Conne told The Associated Press. "There must have been nine or 10 of them. They just kept coming out of that brush.

"lt was just a real happy feeling 'cause we knew we wasn't going to die out there.'"

The Connes were airlifted to a Gold Beach hospital, where they stayed overnight.

Dan Conne hurt his back, and Belinda Conne had hypothermia, Curry County Sheriff John Bishop said. All three were hungry, and enjoyed their potato soup and sandwiches at the hospital.

Belinda and Dan Conne, both 47, were discharged Sunday. Their son, who suffered frostbite, hypothermia and a sprained ankle, remained in the hospital for more treatment.

While lost, the cold and hungry family could see search helicopters and airplanes flying low and slow overhead. But they couldn't get the pilots' attention through the thick, coastal forest vegetation.

They eventually used the screen on their dead cellphone and the blade of a sheath knife to flash a signal.

"The wife had the Blackberry, and I had the knife," Dan Conne said. "I kept flashing. The wife said, `You're blinding them.' But I wanted to make sure they seen us. I wasn't taking no chance."

The family was spotted by Jackson County Commissioner John Rachor, spending his first day searching for them in his own helicopter with Curry County Sheriff's Lt. John Ward.

Rachor had been up two hours and decided to go outside the search area, heading uphill from where the family parked their Jeep, instead of down.

"We couldn't find anything in the obvious places, so we decide to go to the not-obvious places," he said.

Rachor is the same pilot who found a San Francisco family lost in a snowstorm in 2006 just 35 miles from where he found the Connes. In 2006, Rachor flew Kati Kim and her two young daughters to safety after spotting them near their car. James Kim died of hypothermia trying to hike out for help.

On Saturday, Rachor saw a movement on the edge of a deep ravine in tall timber. A man in tan bib overalls was waving his arms.

Ward marked the spot on his GPS and called the Coast Guard for a helicopter to winch the family out. He also called a nearby ground team to give them immediate aid, then flew back to Gold Beach for fuel.

The Coast Guard lifted out Michael and Dan Conne first, then returned for Belinda. The dog walked out with searchers.

Dan Conne said the three got lost Jan. 29 after going back for a second load of hedgehog and black trumpet mushrooms, which they sell to a local buyer. It was Belinda's day off from her motel maid job.

They left their four Chihuahua dogs at the fifth-wheel trailer at the campground where they live, and drove to first one spot, then returned for peanut butter sandwiches and went to a new spot they were not familiar with.

In the heat of the afternoon, they left their jackets at the end of a gravel road. Their last meal was a peanut butter sandwich each on Sunday.

When they didn't come home the first night, the camp host alerted authorities. Searchers hit the ground Monday. Wednesday, searchers found the Connes' Jeep.

The Connes spent the first night in rain, sheltering under a pile of brush. The second day, they built a lean-to, but it fell down. Trying to find their way out, they discovered a hollow log they could all three squeeze into, and they stayed there, covering the opening with bark and hiking downhill to a creek to fill plastic bags with water. When it rained, they tried to plug the leaks with bits of wood.

"It was pretty tight in there," Dan Conne said. "I'm sure a bear would have been real comfortable in there."

They were never able to start a fire, having no matches or lighters.

"Every other time we been out there, every one of us had lighters, except this time," Dan Conne said. "Rubbing sticks together? That don't work. Slamming rocks together? Only on TV.

"There was a lot of debating, back and forth, whether to stay or go. Mikey couldn't walk. If we had to leave him, that wasn't an option. Belinda was down. I could barely walk. We just didn't know which way to go."

Searchers found a trail and a few hopeful clues along the way: a can of Pepsi, mushroom-picking buckets, a few pieces of clothing. But not the people they were searching for.

At one point, the Connes spotted a search helicopter close enough for them to see the sheriff riding inside, but their attempt to signal went unseen.

After getting out of the hospital, Dan Conne picked up Jesse and the Chihuahuas, which had been cared for at the animal shelter after the rescue. Jesse jumped and danced around at seeing him again.

"I don't think we could have done it," Belinda Conne said of eating their pet. "I probably would have starved to death first."

Dan Conne said he tried to eat a hedgehog mushroom while in the forest but found it "nasty." He gave away the mushrooms he collected.

"I don't ever want to see one of these again," he said.

Legal professional Affiliate marketing * The key in order to Legal ...

February 6th, 2012 by dan

It?s exceptional to make note of that we now have still many founded complaintant?s lawyers without defined Affiliate marketing finances. I am not conversing solo professionals below, fairly businesses using a few, four or maybe more attorneys. Maybe your own company dominates their market place because you landed a local tv set legitimate expert show, otherwise you possess do well as a result of seven determine circumstance testimonials and referrals from the community ? the reason why would certainly virtually any Lawyer seo n?t need to get more prospects online, the place that the come back on the advertising and marketing bucks could be more than virtually any additional purchase?

5 years back, an expert Site was level for your study course for any effective lawyer. Nowadays, an adult Website marketing program is often a ?must-have? no longer a new ?nice-to-have?.

Thus, how will you commence and also exactly what do your core mindset is? The answer to this relies about what you are trying to perform and the type of start up business sales opportunities that you?re trying to generate.

A nicely designed Internet site is commonly the first task for some firms. Design and style is more than looks. To expect precisely how favorable your online site is for you to catching qualified prospects and how well your posts displays the lookup site visitors you would like to generate.

The 2nd stage for most plaintiff?s firms is search engine marketing. You?ll find on-site factors (which includes tag words, keywords, distinct landing pages) and also off site aspects (which include index submissions, backlink building, writing and submitting articles, press announcements). Search engine optimisation has become really superior plus it will pay to do your research and speak to several vendors before you make a determination.

Because of the developing position associated with written content searching motor formulas, the subsequent consideration for law firms could be the a higher level inside or external means for you to invest in web content writing for the company. Obtaining Seo San diego professionals keep an eye on as well as enhance almost all written content created by your own firm can enlarge the value of these types of initiatives. In reality, this is a single vital location that a lot of attorneys ignore. These people improve his or her Web site, they have a agency participate in link building and so the law firm earnings to have interior employee up-date your site, with little if any respect for the impact on internet search engine acknowledgement. Therefore, Law firm Website marketing endeavours dwindle effective and a lot period will be thrown away, when outcomes has been attained with less resource purchase.

Some organizations could decide in which Pay per click marketing is a possible substitute particularly conditions. In a few dangerous tort or perhaps merchandise defect cases businesses need to behave speedily as well as Search engine optimization features too long of your increase serious amounts of just isn?t adequately predictable. Whilst Search engine marketing may work properly for the search term like ?medical malpractice legal professional Fresh York? it won?t soar regarding ?Hydroxycut lawsuit?, exactly where occasion is important and corporations are searhing for to succeed in a certain claimant target audience prior to levels of competition can.

Facebook's Zuckerberg to keep iron grip after IPO - In2EastAfrica ...

SAN FRANCISCO?(Reuters) ? Facebook unveiled plans for the biggest ever Internet IPO that could raise as much as $10 billion, but made it clear CEO Mark Zuckerberg will exercise almost complete control over the company, leaving investors with little say.

The Harvard dropout, who launched the social networking phenomenon from his dorm room, will control 56.9 percent of the voting shares in a company expected to be valued at up to $100 billion when it goes public. Facebook says it has 845 million active monthly users.

Wednesday?s long-awaited filing kicks off a process that will culminate in Silicon Valley?s biggest coming-out party since the heyday of the dotcom boom and bust.

In its filing Facebook says it is seeking to raise $5 billion, but that is a figure used to calculate registration fees among others and analysts estimate it could tap investors for $10 billion.

That would value the company at $100 billion, dwarfing storied tech giants such as Hewlett Packard Co, while validating the explosive growth worldwide of social media as communication and entertainment.

Zuckerberg?s economic control of about 28 percent of the shares would be worth $28 billion at a $100 billion valuation, ranking him as the fourth-richest American.

The 27-year-old?s ownership position means Facebook, a company dissected in 2010?s Oscar-winning ?The Social Network?, will not need to appoint a majority of independent directors or set up board committees to oversee compensation and other matters.

The company?s ownership structure and bylaws go against shareholder-friendly corporate governance practices put in place in the United States after years of investor activism.

As Facebook states in its prospectus, Zuckerberg will ?control all matters submitted to stockholders for vote, as well as the overall management and direction of our company.?

Zuckerberg struck deals with several Facebook investors that granted him voting rights over their shares in all or most situations. Those included Yuri Milner?s DST Global, venture capital firm The Founders Fund, and entities affiliated with Technology Crossover Ventures, the IPO filing shows.

Google Inc?s Sergey Brin and Larry Page retained control of the search giant through similar arrangements and the Sulzbergers did much the same at the New York Times.

?Zuckerberg, at the time, probably had his choice of investors,? said Steven Kaplan, a professor at University of Chicago?s Booth School of Business, who researches venture capital and corporate governance. ?He basically had the ability to say ?my way or the highway.??

?The downside of doing this is that the value of Facebook may be slightly lower than it would be if he were not retaining control.?

Facebook could make its market debut in the middle of the year based on the usual timetable of IPOs.

Its IPO prospectus shows that Facebook generated $3.71 billion in revenue and made $1 billion in net profit last year, up 65 percent from the $606 million it made in 2010.

?We often talk about inventions like the printing press and the television,? Zuckerberg said in a letter accompanying the documents. ?Today, our society has reached another tipping point.?

?The scale of the technology and infrastructure that must be built is unprecedented.?

Facebook appointed Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan as its lead underwriters. Other bookrunners include Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Barclays Capital and Allen & Co.

Zuckerberg agreed to cut his compensation from $1.48 million last year to $1 effective January 1, 2013, following the example of Apple founder Steve Jobs.

Facebook?s chief operating officer and Zuckerberg?s top lieutenant, Sheryl Sandberg, earned $30.8 million in total compensation last year.

DOTCOM MANIA?

Facebook?s growing popularity has pressured entrenched Internet companies from Yahoo to Google Inc. In 2011, the social network overtook Yahoo to become the top provider of online display ads in the United States by revenue, industry research firm eMarketer says.

A $10 billion IPO would be the fourth-largest in U.S. history after Visa Inc, General Motors, and AT&T Wireless, Thomson Reuters data shows.

The $5 billion figure in Wednesday?s prospectus was an initial, reference figure ? a basis for registration fees, among other things ? and could change based on investor demand.

The prospectus said 85 percent of Facebook?s 2011 revenue was derived from advertising. Social-gaming company Zynga, creator of Farmville, accounted for 12 percent of Facebook?s revenue last year.

The IPO will dwarf any recent debuts of Internet companies, such as Zynga, LinkedIn Corp, Groupon Inc and Pandora Media Inc.

Their IPOs had mixed receptions. The last debut, from Zynga, closed 5 percent below its IPO price during its first trading day in December.

Google raised just shy of $2 billion in 2004, while Groupon last year tapped $700 million and Zynga $1 billion.

THE HACKER WAY

Facebook aims to be more attractive to potential large advertisers. It has improved its ad targeting capabilities as it collects user data through new features such as the Timeline, said George John, founder of Rocket Fuel, a digital marketing company.

Advertising revenue increased 69 percent in 2011 from 2010, and its average revenue per ad increased 18 percent.

?As Facebook gathers more and more users? time and data, it makes sense for advertisers to get more serious about allocating more budget to Facebook,? he said.

In its prospectus, Facebook revealed an effective 2011 tax rate of 41 percent and warned it could climb in 2012. That rate surpasses the average corporate rate of 35 percent and far outstrips industry peers like Apple, which through offshore businesses pay far less.

Yet in his letter to investors, Zuckerberg stressed Facebook?s ?social mission? over the pursuit of profits.

?Facebook was not originally founded to be a company,? he said. ?Simply put: we don?t build services to make money; we make money to build better services.?

He laid out his vision for a company that remained grounded in an engineering culture, devoting several paragraphs of his letter to what he called ?The Hacker Way? at Facebook.

Some of Facebook?s most successful products ? including Timeline, chat and video ? emerged from ?hackathons? where coders gathered to build out prototypes and compare notes, Zuckerberg wrote.

?Hackers believe that something can always be better, and that nothing is ever complete,? he said. ?There?s a hacker mantra that you?ll hear a lot around Facebook offices: ?Code wins arguments.??

NEW YORK (AP) ? A lawsuit claims a leak from Marisa Tomei's New York City apartment has damaged the homes of two downstairs neighbors, including director John Waters.

The neighbors' insurance companies filed the suit this week in a Manhattan court. The suit says the "My Cousin Vinny" actress' "negligence" caused a September 2010 leak that left more than $128,000 in damage at the building in Manhattan's Greenwich Village.

Waters says in an email the case is a standard insurance claim completely out of his hands. The "Hairspray" director says there's no animosity between him and Tomei.

The insurers' lawyer and representatives for the Academy Award-winning actress haven't responded to messages left Thursday seeking comment.

US diplomat sees "hope in diplomacy" with NKorea (AP)

SEOUL, South Korea ? The top U.S. diplomat for East Asia is reassuring South Korea that any diplomatic dealings with North Korea will be backed up by an unwavering U.S.-South Korea military presence.

Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Campbell said in a speech Tuesday at a dinner hosted by The Korea Society in Seoul that "there is hope in diplomacy" but that hope rests on "the reality of a very strong deterrence from the military."

He says North Korea must improve relations with rival South Korea before it can have better relations with the world.

Many are closely watching U.S.-North Korea ties for clues about the direction North Korea will take as new leader Kim Jong Un works to consolidate power after his father's Dec. 17 death.

The nations weather (AP)

Weather Underground Forecast for Wednesday, February 01, 2012.

There are two weather systems that will affect the nation Wednesday. One will be the Pacific front that will push through the West and the other one will be the storm system over the Great Lakes moving through New England.

Out West, rain and high elevation snow will continue from Washington southward to northern California Wednesday morning as the Pacific front approaches. This system is expected to push ashore late Wednesday morning, reaching the Northern Plains by Thursday morning. As a result, rain and mountain snow will gradually expand eastward across the Intermountain West throughout the day. By the evening, the West Coast should dry out as the system moves east and a ridge of high pressure builds from the Eastern Pacific.

Moving eastward, the storm system over the Great Lakes will continue to advance eastward, and carry a cold front through the Ohio Valley and Northeast. Rich Gulf moisture combined with cold air on the surface and warm air aloft will lead to periods of mixed snow, sleet and freezing rain Wednesday morning over parts of central New England. To the south of the warm front, all rain is expected through the rest of New England. In addition, widely scattered showers and thunderstorms will fire up ahead of the cold front across much of the lower Mississippi Valley, Southeast and Mid-Atlantic. In particular, strong thunderstorms with locally heavy rain are possible from the central Gulf Coast northeastward to Southern Appalachians. Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday have ranged from a morning low of -19 degrees at Clayton Lake, Maine to a high of 82 degrees at Fort Myers, Fla.
