Obama touts benefits of auto bailout as debate looms

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama sought on Saturday to sustain momentum from Vice President Joe Biden's strong debate showing by touting the benefits of one of his signature actions, the rescue of the U.S. auto industry, as he prepared for his next debate with Republican Mitt Romney.

"We refused to let Detroit go bankrupt," Obama said in his weekly radio address. "We bet on American workers and American ingenuity, and three years later, that bet is paying off in a big way."

The president will drop from view for several days to prepare for his second debate with Romney on Tuesday. By focusing on the health of the auto industry, currently benefiting from strong sales, Obama is reminding voters he came to the industry's rescue. Romney had opposed government help for automakers.

Obama is hoping to build on Biden's confident performance at the vice presidential debate on Thursday after his own listless debate performance last week gave Romney a sharp boost in opinion polls. He meets the Massachusetts governor for the second of three debates on Tuesday evening in a town-hall format.

In his address, Obama highlighted trade agreements that helped promote sales of U.S. autos abroad. Romney has called the Obama administration's record on trade weak and promised to wage much more aggressive campaigns to open markets abroad to U.S. goods and services.

"I want to see more cars on the road in places like South Korea imported from Detroit and Toledo and Chicago," Obama added.

Obama also said that "after 30 years of inaction, we raised fuel standards so that by the middle of the next decade, cars and light trucks will average almost 55 miles per gallon - nearly double what they get today."

Fly genomes show natural selection and return to Africa

Saturday, October 13, 2012

When ancestral humans walked out of Africa tens of thousands of years ago, Drosophila melanogaster fruit flies came along with them. Now the fruit flies, widely used for genetics research, are returning to Africa and establishing new populations alongside flies that never left ? offering new insights into the forces that shape genetic variation.

That's one of the findings from two new papers published this month by researchers at the University of California, Davis, and their colleagues that describe the genomes of almost 200 strains of the tiny flies.

The work reveals strong evidence of pervasive natural selection throughout the D. melanogaster genome, said Charles Langley, professor of genetics in the Department of Evolution and Ecology at UC Davis and an author on both papers. That is in striking contrast with what is known of the human genome, which shows comparatively little evidence of adaptation over the last 100,000 years.

The overall aim of the research is to better understand the forces that shape genetic variation, Langley said. Human geneticists are working to sequence a thousand human genomes to get at the same issue. The knowledge from studying fly genetics has and will help in that effort, he said.

"Most of the theory and statistical methods in human genetics were originally motivated by studies of flies, because they're easier and faster to work with," Langley said. "Model organisms like these play a critical role in developing tools and ideas."

The first paper, published Oct. 1 in the journal Genetics, reports the genomes of 37 strains of Drosophila collected in Raleigh, N.C., and six strains from the sub-Saharan nation of Malawi. The other paper, to be published in Public Library of Science Genetics and currently available online as a preprint, describes the genomes of 139 fly strains covering 22 African and one European population.

Drosophila melanogaster, like humans, originated in Africa, and that's where they show the most genetic diversity ? just as humans do. The flies are thought to have appeared in Europe about 50,000 years ago, along with modern humans. On the way, both humans and flies squeezed through genetic bottlenecks that reduced the diversity in the population. Over generations, different fly strains evolved quite specialized niches ? such as a fondness for colonizing breweries, for example.

But the African fly genomes show that just in the past couple of decades, flies similar to those found in Europe or the U.S. have established populations back in Africa, often in new environments such as urban and industrial developments. For example, where modern breweries and bottled beer have displaced traditional African brewing, "Europeanized" brewery flies have followed.

The spread of those "European" genes is more rapid than if it were occurring by random processes, the researchers write.

"It may be that urbanization and development favor the more 'European' flies," Langley said.

Everything You Need To Know About Home Improvement ...

Use semi-gloss paint on trim or moldings and high humidity areas. Semi-gloss paint looks fantastic on trim and moldings, as it really draws attention to the detail. It can also be used on bathroom and kitchen walls, as it is very resistant to humidity, and withstand stains. Be careful to only use gloss paint on a really smooth surface, as imperfections will be highly visible. That being said, it is the easiest of all paint finishes to clean.

When buying supplies for a home-improvement project, don?t forget safety equipment. Include gloves, safety glasses, hard hats, and steel-toed boots as necessary. The cost of being hurt on the job will far outweigh the cost of the products you buy to keep your body safe. Make sure you wear them at all times, too!

The kitchen is usually the room that sells the place. Take a look around and see if there are any inexpensive things you can do to your kitchen to make it look recently update. Get rid of that wallpaper or add hardware to your cabinets. Do whatever is simple and quick, but effective. You will be able to mention the update in you listing and buyers like seeing that.

If you live in a rural area, consider purchasing a power back up generator. When the lights go out and sometimes your heating even depends on it, you can be without power for hours or even days in seriously harsh weather. A power generator can help you take care of the necessities that you can?t do without when the electricity is out.

You should change the faucet that is in your bathroom if you want to get an updated and fun look. Many people do not realize that they can change out the faucet in their bathroom on their own without hiring a plumber. All faucets come with easy to follow directions and are very easy for any homeowner to install on their own.

If you have a tear in your screen-door or window-screen, here?s a quick tip you can use that will save you money. For tears that are small, use a bit of clear nail polish. For a slightly larger tear, apply a bit of cling wrap to each side of the screen. This quick patch will do until you decide to replace the screen.

To cut down your home?s energy costs, replace your current thermostat with one that can be programmed. Many families save close to $200 yearly through programmable thermostat use. A programmable thermostat can be set to change when your family is sleeping or out of the house, keeping you from paying for heating and cooling you don?t need. They?re also inexpensive, and can be picked up for less than $40.

Install carbon monoxide detectors in your home. Carbon monoxide is an invisible gas that you can?t taste or smell. If you inhale too much of it, however, it could be fatal. Young children are particularly susceptible to the poison. Don?t take the chance! These detectors are cheap and easily installed.

If you would like to spruce up your home, the biggest impact is to paint your walls. A fresh coat of paint will give you instant results and make the home look new again. Paint doesn?t cost much, and if you don?t like the final results, it is easy to buy another paint color and try again.

Painting home improvement projects require dry days. This tip is critical for having success in painting your home. On wet and humid afternoons, paint dries more slowly on the walls, which means that you will be at your project longer. Only painting on the dry days will cut your time in between coats and speed up the project overall.

Now you see that home improvement is a lot more than just buying and painting things in your house. It takes skill and an eye for pleasant aesthetics. You don?t want your home to look slovenly, so why not take some time to learn how to do it right? The above tips should have given you some helpful advice.

Donald Trump's back with 14 'Apprentice' All-Stars

NEW YORK (AP) ? If at first you don't succeed ....

NBC's "The Celebrity Apprentice" is bringing back 13 players fired from past "Apprentice" contests, plus one notable winner, in the first-ever "All-Star Celebrity Apprentice."

"We wouldn't have done the 'All-Star' concept unless we were able to get the right contestants back," said Donald Trump, the host and boardroom boss who once again will be pronouncing each contestant's fate.

The series, which on Monday starts shooting this new season for a March 2013 premiere, announced its slate of 14 contenders Friday morning.

They include:

? country music star Trace Adkins.

? actor Stephen Baldwin.

? actor Gary Busey.

? magician and illusionist Penn Jillette.

? DJ artist and rap star Lil Jon.

? NBA Hall-of-Famer Dennis Rodman.

? Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider.

? actress and author Marilu Henner.

? singer La Toya Jackson.

? TV personality and actress Claudia Jordan.

? reality star Omarosa, who competed in the first, pre-celebrity edition of "The Apprentice."

? actress and author Lisa Rinna.

? Playboy Playmate of the Year Brande Roderick.

? plus Poison frontman Bret Michaels, who in 2010 emerged as the winner despite life-threatening ailments that included a brain hemorrhage and hospitalization for what doctors called a warning stroke.

"They're all very smart, and I think they learned a lot from their last go-around," Trump told The Associated Press. "This time, some of them will change their game to fool their rivals ? some for better, some for worse."

The winner, as usual, will collect $250,000 to donate to his or her chosen charity.

Trump was asked whether, beneath the tough manner he displays for each contender in the boardroom, he has secret favorites in the race.

"Absolutely, I do," he replied. "Some people I like much more than others. I'm a human being, so I have my likes and my dislikes. But I don't let that cloud my judgment. If I like somebody but somebody deserves to be fired, I'll always fire them, as opposed to somebody that I don't like if they don't deserve it. I would lose total credibility if I did otherwise."

The upcoming season will be the 13th for the overall "Apprentice" franchise, a track record that amazes Trump.

"Who would have thought?" he marveled. "When we first signed for it, they didn't even take an option (for more seasons). No one thought it would go any further."

It did, catching on with its debut in winter 2004, as Trump introduced "You're fired" to the treasury of TV catchphrases.

Since then, he said, it's been lucrative and fun.

"My business is real estate, but the show has been an amazing experience," he said, "good in every way."

It's also been, in some fashion, a learning experience.

The main thing he's learned? "You can never predict," he replied. "I'll see a contestant come out, and you would say they're going to win, on the first day. And then they're the first one fired."

But there's been one other thing he's discovered: the impact of his exposure on TV.

"I was very well-known before the show," he said, "but, frankly, I used to be able to walk outside. I can't even walk outside now! Overall I think the show's great, but there are times when you'd like to have a little bit of privacy."

Then Trump laughed at a reporter's facetious suggestion that he consider donning a disguise.

"I could put on a real wig," Trump joked. "A lot of people say, 'He wears a wig.' I don't. But maybe I should wear one: a big black sucker!"

CDC: Meningitis outbreak growing, 14 people dead

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Federal health officials said they've tracked down more than 90 percent of the roughly 14,000 people who may have received contaminated steroid shots, urging anyone with early symptoms of potentially deadly meningitis to seek help fast.

Of the 170 people sickened in the outbreak, all but one have a rare fungal meningitis, and 14 have died, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday. One person identified by Michigan health officials received the steroid shot in the ankle and has an infection there. While the biggest concern is for people given the shots for back pain, the CDC said people who received the injections in joints should also be alert to signs of localized infection, including redness, pain, swelling and fever.

More than 50 vials of the steroid produced by a specialty pharmacy in Massachusetts, the New England Compounding Center, have been found contaminated with some sort of fungus, said Deborah Autor of the Food and Drug Administration. The investigation is continuing into how the contamination could have occurred.

But a Massachusetts official said Thursday that it appears the company violated state law governing how compounding pharmacies are supposed to work. They are not supposed to do large-scale production like a drug manufacturer, but to produce medication for patient-specific prescriptions, said Dr. Madeleine Biondolillo of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

"This organization chose to apparently violate the licensing requirements under which they were allowed to operate," she told reporters Thursday.

The pharmacy has recalled the steroid that was sent to clinics in 23 states, as well as everything else it makes.

Idaho becomes the 11th state to report at least one illness. The others are Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee and Virginia.

How to Recover Lost Photo from Computer Easily - Data Recovery

Thursday 11 october 2012 4 11 /10 /Oct /2012 04:22

Is It Possible to Recover Lost Photo from Computer or Other Devices?

The answer is definitely YES! In fact, computer hard drive or store devices formatting doesn't erase the photo files (until they are overwritten by other files). When you format your computer hard drive or store devices, the file system of disk is replaced with a new empty file system, thus, the entries of all the files and directories stored on the disk are erased and they become inaccessible. But hard drive maintains an index file, which tells the operating system where a particular file is stored. When you format the hard drive, links between index and file are deleted. The file remains physically intact. You can restore formatted files from hard drive as long as the original files are not overwritten by other files.

Causes of Photo Loss

There could be numbers of reasons for photo loss. Photo recovery software can restore your lost photo files under below mentioned reasons:

?Accidental deletion of the multimedia file(s)

PST: Favorites emerge for new US women's coach

If you?re looking to get up to speed on Pia Sundhage?s potential replacements, you won?t get a better dossier than Lauren Barker?s post at Stars and Stripes FC. Of the five people who were interviewed last week, Barker profiles the three who seem to have the best chance of being the next U.S. Women?s National Team coach (though U.S. Soccer is doing a good job keeping the candidate).

Allow me to build on Lauren?s good work ?

Right now, Notre Dame head coach Randy Waldrum appears to be the favorite. As Barker notes, if there was a line of succession to the role, it would be his turn. Three of Sundhage?s four predecessors had significant head coaching experience at the college level, where Waldrum?s been extremely successful. In this Anson Dorrance, North Carolina-dominated era of college soccer, Waldrum?s managed to win two national titles. Given U.S. women?s soccer?s dependence on the college game as its exclusive provider of talent, expertise with NCAA soccer is the significant advantage Waldrum has over most of his competition.

That competition is coming from Paul Riley, the former coach of the Philadelphia Independence. Though a favorite among those who watched his WPS teams, Riley was initially considered a long shot for the position. The England-born coach had vehemently spoken out against Pia Sundhage?s use of Amy Rodriguez, claiming the then-Independence forward?s confidence was destroyed by Sundhage?s handling of her at the 2011 World Cup. There, Sundhage benched Rodriguez, a long time (struggling) starter for the team, as the likes of Lauren Cheney, Megan Rapinoe, Alex Morgan and Tobin Heath started getting more starts.

U.S. Soccer has apparently seen the outburst for what it was ? a tactic designed to boost Rodriguez?s spirits. Riley may yet replace the coach he so ardently attacked.

During his two years in Women?s Professional Soccer, there was little doubt Riley was the league?s best coach. He won consecutive Coach of the Year awards while taking teams with inferior talent to back-to-back championship games (including in Philadelphia?s expansion year of 2010). He skillfully manages to be both demanding and a players? coach, adding the tactical acumen to leverage his players? work and trust. Most tellingly, Riley managed to take an array of different attackers (Tasha Kai, Veronica Boquete, Rodriguez) and turn them into weapons, hinting his plans were as influential as the players? talents.

Unlike Waldrum, Riley doesn?t have an extensive college background. He started his coaching career at C.W. Post ? a small Division II program in Long Island ? but left in 1997. From there he went into the U.S. semi-pro ranks, initially coaching in the PDL before switching to the women?s game. Like Sundhage, he?s a foreign-born, has significant domestic experience, and manages to be a personality (a completely different one than Sundhage) without putting himself center stage.

Gulati, however, hinted last week that all things being equal, U.S. Soccer would prefer an American coach. Does Riley qualify? He?s been in the United States for 30 years, but he was born in England. To some, he might not be as American as the Texas-born Waldrum, but how much ?American? do you need to qualify? At some point, you?re either American or you?re not.

(Trivia: Waldrum and Riley were born two days apart in 1961.)

Right now, it looks like Waldrum?s college success (along with his time coaching the U.S. Women?s U-20 National Team) have given him the inside track, but Riley?s close enough to be considered a co-favorite. Barring a last minute surge from the pack, one of these two will win the race.

Barker mentions one of those pack members: former national team coach Tony DiCicco, who most fans will know for his work as an ESPN analyst during the 2011 World Cup. More recently, he spent two disappointing years as head coach of the Boston Breakers, results overshadowed by his role in guiding the U.S. to first at the 1999 World Cup.

The major concern with DiCicco would be the change in approach to him from Sundhage. On a spectrum of styles, DiCicco?s would be far removed from Pia Sundhage, a head coach whose close relationship with her players was a unique combination of peer and parent ? one inspiring deep loyalty. As we saw on ESPN?s set last summer (in the relationship between Brandi Chastain and her former coach), DiCicco?s style is closer to a traditional coach-player relationship. With a veteran team coming off five years of Sundhage, switching to DiCicco may prove too drastic.

Airlines eye subway-style self-boarding

19 hrs.

Self-service is king when it comes to flying these days, with travelers checking in online, downloading their own boarding passes and tagging their bags.

But passengers outside the U.S. often perform one more task on their own at the airport: self-boarding.

Scan your boarding pass at a gate equipped with a subway-like turnstile, and voil?, you?re on your way to the plane?no gate agent required.

It?s an option travelers seem to love: Almost 90 percent said self-boarding is their favorite self-service technology in a survey of more than 2,500 passengers from 70-plus countries released on Tuesday. The poll was conducted by SITA, a company that specializes in air transport communications.

You?ll likely encounter automated gates at airports in Europe or Asia, but in the United States, they are still a rare sight. One of the few places you?ll see them is at the shiny, new Terminal 3 at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas, where JetBlue has been testing self-boarding since July.

?We are receiving positive feedback -- customers do like it and it does speed up the boarding process,? said JetBlue spokeswoman Tamara Young. ?There?s not the bunching that was previously experienced with the agents taking the tickets.?

Gate agents are still there, watching over the process to make sure travelers don?t encounter any snags, Young said.

Those snags are one of the reasons airlines have been proceeding carefully, industry observers said.

?If you've seen people using self-check-out at supermarkets, they aren't generally as adept at scanning bar codes as the actual check out personnel,? said Robert W. Mann Jr., an airline industry analyst.

?When you narrow it down to the pointy end of the funnel, when everybody is trying to get on the airplane through one door, the person who struggles with the scanning is holding up 150 people and they?re all (upset).?

Still, self-boarding seems to be an attractive option for both airlines and travelers.

Some 17 international carriers now use the technology and there are 113 automated gates at airports around the world, according to recent figures collected by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). The group, which represents some of the world?s biggest airlines, supports self-boarding as part of its "Fast Travel"?initiative.

Airlines that pioneered the process include SAS and Lufthansa in Europe, and All Nippon Airways in Asia, said IATA spokesman Perry Flint.

Passengers may like the service because it?s somewhat empowering, Mann said. Travel requires people to give up a lot of control over their environment, so this is a small instance where they can take charge.

But the cost of installing the gates may be an obstacle for carriers in the U.S., where airlines usually own or rent the check-in space in airports where they operate and can?t spread the expense among several different users, Flint said.

?It may not make economic sense for the airline to make that investment if they?re the only ones who are going to be using it and if they are already operating at a very high level of efficiency,? Flint said.

Bottom?line: Don?t look for automated self-boarding gates dominating U.S. airports any time soon, but be ready for subway-like boarding in other parts of the world.

And don?t forget your smartphone when you travel.

The SITA survey also found that the number of passengers with the gadgets has ?risen dramatically? over the past year, from 54 percent to 70 percent.

?We?re now at the tipping point of explosive growth in mobile services offered to passengers, which will give them more control over their journey and reduce stress,? said Francesco Violante, the CEO of SITA.
