99% Finding Nemo 3D

All Critics (223) | Top Critics (45) | Fresh (233) | Rotten (2) | DVD (48)

A genuinely funny and touching film that, in less than a decade, has established itself as a timeless classic.

It makes even more compelling what is still my all-time favorite Pixar film.

Think of this re-release as an encore, a handy touchstone for you and your kids. "Finding Nemo" was and remains the gold standard against which all other modern animated films are measured, a classic from the day it premiered.

In this seamless blending of technical brilliance and storytelling verve, the Pixar team has made something as marvelously soulful and innately, fluidly American as jazz.

Nemo, with its ravishing underwater fantasia, manages to trump the design glamour of earlier Pixar films.

I don't exactly worship Pixar, but "Finding Nemo" is truly a great film.

Gill is Platoon's Sgt. Elias if he'd survived Sgt. Barnes' treachery and returned to civilian life weary and hard-bitten from his experiences. And also a fish.

Finding Nemo 3D is a quality post-conversion experience that successfully enhances the 2003 film's original standout visuals.

The 3D gives the images a little more depth but they already had heft and weight. The 3D is a money-making gimmick, nothing more.

A great blend of storytelling and technology.

It's downright curmudgeonly to remain focused on the negatives when the rest of the picture is saturated with invention and wit.

It's bright, it's beautiful and it hasn't aged a day. So why, then, do we need to see it in 3-D?

A rare example of a movie that not only survives its 3-D conversion but benefits from it

It was as funny as I remember and brilliant because it is subtle. It just knocks it out of the park. I love everything about this movie, one of my favorite Pixar movies of all time, 5/5 Schmoes. The new sound/3D adds to the greatness that is Nemo.

If you're fishing for fun in an ocean of movie mediocrity, grab the kids or the grandkids, fork out a few extra bucks and see this one in three-dimensions.

It's a great movie, so much fun, an acheivement that should be enjoyed by children of all ages and worth seeing it in 3D.

Sea-worthy w/enhanced visual lure and rich, humorous characters set in a double narrative; this 3D revisit allows us to fall overboard all over again.

If ever there was a film that wasn't broke, this is it. So naturally they converted it into 3D for a special re-release this weekend. (Stupid irony.)

I believe my sensitivity to certain creative choices of the picture has dulled some, while age has opened my eyes to its complex relationships and tireless sense of exploration.

When the blunt head of Bruce the shark slams into the screen like a hammer, everyone -- adults included -- gasps

At its best, the added dimension is merely harmless, making the movie blurry enough that you need special glasses to make it sharp again.

How to cope with animal crises | Tom Cox

I'd just walked past the sign for the abstraction borehole at Lover's Lane near Garboldisham when I saw the escaped turkey and the woman coming towards me on the horse. She was riding one-handed, clutching her mobile phone to her ear. "Oh, a man's here," she said into it. "He'll help me get her back in the field."

This is a problem I often find, being hairy and out in the countryside, especially at times when my beard has got to the stage where it is not so much a beard as a handy recession scarf: people often assume that the hairiness denotes some kind of ruggedly practical nature. "That facial hair must be a signifier of that bloke's capability to handle a minor farming crisis," they will decide, rather than something more accurate, such as "That facial hair is a signifier of its owner's need for warmth and his love for the band Traffic around the indisputable high point of their bucolic folk-funk 1970 LP John Barleycorn Must Die."

Abstraction borehole

In the event, I did pretty well with the turkey, especially as I was still a little dazed from trying to work out what an abstraction borehole might be. That is to say, I held it for a moment, without crying or shouting "BOLLOCKS! IT'S A LIVE TURKEY! IN MY ACTUAL ARMS!", then looked after its owner's horse while she popped the bird back over the fence into the field where it lived.

She introduced herself as Georgie. "I haven't seen you around here before," she said. One reason she hadn't seen me around there before was due to the fact I live several miles from Garboldisham, none of the walks in my Norfolk walking books are located there and in the past I have been scared to do Norfolk walks that are not in my Norfolk walking books, because I fear change.

Gothick Norfolk

Today had been different, though. I'd boldly spread out my OS Map on the carpet and plotted my very own circular nine-mile ramble. I'd chosen Garboldisham because the previous day I'd bought a lovely secondhand folklore guide called Gothick Norfolk for two quid and it had told me that the Iceni Queen Boudicca's grave was located there. Additionally, it had a ditch called "Devil's Ditch" and, as I live my entire outdoor life under the delusion that I am directing my own low budget folk horror film, I am hopelessly attracted to any topographical feature containing the word "devil".

"My husband and I are going onion picking in a moment," said Georgie. "Do you want to come?" Ten minutes later, after being introduced to two overweight sheep, some bantam hens and a pair of Belgian hares called Athena and Hannibal, I was bouncing along on the back of a tractor driven by Georgie's other half, Richard, past the abstraction borehole and deep into the forest.

Gothick Norfolk?

Upon getting home, having finished my walk in the dark, I couldn't help feeling that the adventure had been a direct result of plotting my own route through the wilderness. Without a walking guide, you might not find the resting place of a rebel queen from AD60, as you'd intended, but you could end up rescuing a relative of the grouse species and going onion picking with some strangers.

I felt refreshed, inspired by Georgie and Richard's Good Life existence - apparently they're know as "Tom and Barbara" in the village - and the serendipity of the encounter, but a hint of sadness too, left there by a sight I'd seen as we bumped away from Georgie and Richard's place on the tractor: another turkey, alone, limping desperately along, which Georgie had told me, quite matter-of-factly, had been injured, perhaps by one of its peers jumping on its back, and might have to be put down.

As much as I like the idea of keeping animals and living off the land, I doubt my ability to cope in this sort of situation. That morning I'd spent a full nine minutes trying to rescue a spider from the bath, then read a scene about a dying lamb in the latest TC Boyle novel that had reduced me to a globule of human jelly. After this, I'd disposed of a the back half of a vole that had been slaughtered by my cat Shipley.

My cats did go through a phase earlier this year where it looked like they'd stopped killing rodents and brought them into the house purely because they, well, liked having them around the place, but this has passed. Barely a day goes by where I don't have to clean up a mouse's face from outside the spare room. "Bring some slippers!" I tell overnight guests. "Why's that?" they answer. "It's just getting quite cold right now, and I worry about you," I reply, attempting to sound sincere.

Fortunately, only two of my cats are killers. The oldest one, who is 17, is a pacifist intellectual who associates violence with the populist side of British life that he abhors, and my kitten is too young to disembowel a shrew. She can't even miaow properly yet. I know this because the other day I asked her "Have you learned to meow properly yet?" and she replied firmly in negative, by saying "Eweheewah".

I'm also lucky that my cats tend to stick, on the whole, to rodents these days, and small ones at that. There's a fine line between living and dying when you're a vole: voles and small mice will peg out quickly, once seriously injured, and don't look accusingly into your eyes as they breathe their last. Unlike, say, a particular pregnant rat from 2005 whose forlorn face will forever remain etched on my mind like a deeply hurtful social faux pas. And that was just a rat. I don't want to be sizeist about this, but there is no doubt that, as an animal gets bigger, its pain gets that bit more palpable, that bit closer to human emotion.

I know from past evidence that I'm a wreck when dealing with a dying cat, so how would I deal with a critically ill sheep, cow or goat? I'm still thinking about that turkey now, and it wasn't even mine. You could argue that, as with voles, in time I'd become more implacable about the suffering, but I doubt it. And I think this is why, despite my ambitions to be surrounded by all manner of animals, and the fact that I am far more of a country person than a city person, I'll probably continue to be a tourist in the more hardcore rustic world.

I'll go on long walks alone off the beaten track, come close to getting stranded in forests at nightfall, I'll walk past a smallholding and say hello to a sheep or horse in a fake posh voice, even make a hamfisted attempt to help the owners rescue their turkey, and secretly name it "Big Gillian" or "Sebastian", but I won't quite be inspired to follow in their footsteps. When all is said and done, I'll retreat to my safety zone, with its more minor animal crises, where I can just about cope.

Time Running Out on Mortgage Relief Act

Oct 15, 2012 (Marketwire via COMTEX) - The 1.5 million homeowners1 in foreclosure -- and those facing it -- need to understand the different tax implications if the process is finalized by Dec. 31 versus next year. H&R Block (NYSE: HRB) explains that because the soon-to-expire Mortgage Relief Act allows up to $2 million of this forgiven debt to go untaxed, having foreclosure debt forgiven after Dec. 31 could substantially increase tax liability.

After a foreclosure, the bank may choose to forgive some or all of the outstanding loan balance. Typically, forgiven debt is taxable income, but those facing foreclosure on their principal residence could get tax relief from the Mortgage Relief Act if they meet the requirements. Since the bill was enacted in 2007, the number of foreclosures has increased 44 percent, rising from 2.2 million in 2007 to 3.9 million in 2011.2

"The tax implications that may result from having debt forgiven sometimes come as a surprise to taxpayers," said Kathy Pickering, executive director of The Tax Institute at H&R Block. "After foreclosure the house is gone, but the forgiven debt could have significant tax implications, resulting in taxpayers owing more in taxes when they file their next return."

For example, a married couple with combined income of $75,000 who have $100,000 of debt canceled as the result of a foreclosure could owe $27,625 more in income taxes if the foreclosure is finalized after Dec. 31.

Foreclosure and debt cancellation are two separate processes. Additionally, the decisions if and when to cancel debt rest solely with the lender, and it could be months or even years after the foreclosure occurs before the debt is canceled.

"Gains resulting from foreclosure could be taxable, but the losses aren't tax-deductible. Homeowners need to know how foreclosure could create other sources of financial pressure and be better prepared for whatever comes their way," Pickering said.

H&R Block, with 4,000 offices open year-round, At Home? online and the all-new, face-to-face web solution Block Live(SM), offers taxpayers multiple options to meet their filing obligations. The Future of America Is Japan: Runaway Deficits, Runaway Debts

If you want a look at the fiscal future of the U.S., look west to Japan, a nation that sits precariously on a fiscal cliff a thousand feet high.?

If you want to know how the Keynesian Cargo Cult's grand experiment in borrowing money to fund bloated fiefdoms, rapacious cartels and bridges to nowhere ends, just look west (from California) to Japan.?The Japanese State, partly because they seem to believe in the Cargo Cult, and partly to avoid exposing the insolvency of their crony-capitalist financial sector, has been borrowing and spending money on a vast scale for two decades.

The Keynesian Cargo Cult's primary article of faith is that borrowing and blowing huge sums of money on anything and everything will magically restore "aggregate demand," i.e. the animal spirits that drive people to borrow and blow money on consumption. This is of course pure insanity, as people cannot borrow if their balance sheet has been destroyed, their real incomes are declining and they have lost trust in institutions that fear transparency and the truth like the Devil fears garlic.

Recall that the Federal Reserve's Survey of Consumer Finances for 2007-2010 found that?the median net worth of households fell a staggering 39%, from $126,400 to $77,300, and?average household income fell 11%?from $88,300 to $78,500.

But rather than face the fraud and corruption at the heart of American (and Japanese) finance and governance, the Keynesians just want to leave the predatory, parasitic crony-capitalist Status Quo intact and create an illusory world of bogus "demand" and grotesque malinvestment funded by ever-increasing debt.?In effect, the entire Keynesian Project seeks to reinflate asset and government revenue bubbles--the very causes of the global financial meltdown.

Let's see how the Keynesian protection of a corrupt, parastic Status Quo and pursuit of monumental malinvestment has worked for Japan.?Here is the Ministry of Finance's?Highlights of the Budget for FY2012?(via Andrew P.). Consider the ramifications of these numbers:

REVENUES: 90,334 (billion yen)

Tax revenues: 42,346
Other revenues: 3,744

Government Bond Issues (borrowing): 44,244

EXPENDITURES: 90,334

National Debt Service (interest): 21,944

Social Security: 26,390

Other: 42,000

So interest on the debt and Social Security are 114% of tax revenues.?Put another way, tax revenues don't even cover interest on the runaway debt and Social Security costs.

An amazing 49% of the governments budget is borrowed money. Even with near-zero yields on Japanese government bonds (less than 1%), 52% of tax revenues are spent on national debt interest.

Recall that the interest rate Japan's government is paying on its stupendous debt is about 1%. Were that to double to a mere 2%, all of the new debt would go just to pay the interest on existing debt.

Since 2005, annual borrowing has increased 10,000 billion yen (BY) while expenditures rose by 8,000 BY.?Tax revenues have been stagnant at 44,000 BY while the interest expense has risen 19% and Social Security costs have increased by 29%.

You see what's happening:?tax revenues are unchanged from seven years ago while interest and Social Security costs increase dramatically as the debt inexorably expands and more retirees qualify for Social Security.

Now take a look at the?2012 United States federal budget. Net interest on the $16 trillion national debt is "only" $242 billion, while Social Security costs totaled $778 billion. So far, debt and Social Security ($1 trillion) are "only" 40% of total tax revenues, but like Japan, rapidly rising debt will increase interest while a rapidly increasing population of retirees qualifying for Social Security will drive those costs dramatically higher in the years ahead. Given $2.47 trillion in total tax revenues, $3.8 trillion in expenditures and a deficit of $1.3 trillion, 34% of the Federal budget is borrowed money. We are borrowing 52% of total tax revenues.

Does anyone seriously think this is the "road to recovery"??If you want a look at the fiscal future of the U.S., look west to Japan, a nation that sits precariously on a fiscal cliff a thousand feet high.

We are like passengers on the Titanic ten minutes after its fatal encounter with the iceberg: though our financial system seems unsinkable, its reliance on debt and financialization has already doomed it.We cannot know when the Central State and financial system will destabilize, we only know they will destabilize. Shuttle X-ing: Endeavour spacecraft slowly winds through L.A.

The space shuttle Endeavour sits in a strip mall as a Hawaiian Airlines jet approaches a runway at Los Angeles International Airport in Los Angeles, Friday, Oct. 12. Endeavour's 12-mile road trip kicked off shortly before midnight Thursday as it moved from its hangar at the airport en route to the California Science Center, its ultimate destination.

In retirement, it's crawling along the streets of Los Angeles at a sluggish 2 mph, a pace that rush-hour commuters can sympathize with.

Endeavour's two-day, 12-mile road trip to the California Science Center where it will be put on display kicked off early Friday. Rolled on a 160-wheeled carrier, it left from a hangar at the Los Angeles International Airport, passing diamond-shaped "Shuttle?Xing" signs, and reached city streets about two hours later.

Hundreds of spectators, some with pajama-clad children in tow, waited in the predawn darkness. In unison, they held up their cameras and cellphones and gaped as the 170,000-pound Endeavour inched by with its tail towering over streetlights and its wings spanning the roadway.

It made stop-and-go progress, with some halts to check its balance and to prune trees in its path as it crept past strip malls and storefronts.

In a massive feat of parallel parking, the?shuttle?was backed into a shopping center parking lot in the Westchester neighborhood around 5:30 a.m. ? later than expected.

Janet Dion, a family therapist from nearby Manhattan Beach, was in awe as she marveled at Endeavour, its sides weathered by millions of miles in space and two dozen re-entries.

"You can sense the magnitude of where it's been," Dion said, focusing on the heat tiles that protected theshuttle?during the return to Earth.

"It's exciting to see the tiles up close, especially the texture of the tiles," she said. "It's amazing. You can almost feel the fabric of it, like a skin. Like our skin."

Everyone it seemed wanted to pose with Endeavour. Firefighters, police officers and construction workers on duty took turns standing in front of it.

Others saw an opportunity to make a buck. Jason Duran and his friend printed up Endeavour T-shirts and hawked them for $30.

"We're entrepreneurs," he said.

Endeavour will remain at the parking lot for a nine-hour layover as crews worked to widen the carrier so that it could straddle the median during the next part of the trip. It was expected to move again in early afternoon then stop for several more hours to transfer to a special dolly for the cross over the busy Interstate 405 at night.

Ushering a?shuttle?through an urban core is a logistical challenge that took almost a year to plan. Guarded by a security detail reminiscent of a presidential visit, police enforced rolling street and sidewalk closures as early as Thursday night in some locations and discouraged spectators from swarming side streets.

The behemoth transport has caused headaches for shopkeepers along the route who counted on cheering crowds jamming the curbs to boost business.

In the days leading up to Endeavour's move, the owners of Randy's Donuts sold shuttle-shaped pastries emblazoned with the NASA logo and even hung a miniature?shuttle?replica inside the giant doughnut sign visible from the freeway.

Co-owner Larry Weintraub planned to watch the?shuttle?creep by the roadside sign, which has been featured in several movies. But the store, which serves up sweets 24-7, will be closed.

"I'm still excited, but I'm disappointed that people aren't going to be able to stand in the streets and shout 'Yay,'" he said.

Saturday is typically the busiest day for James Fugate, who co-owns Eso Won Books in South Los Angeles. But with Endeavour expected to shuffle through, Fugate braced for a ho-hum day in sales.

"We don't close because we're slow. That's when you pull out a book to read," he said.

The baby of the?shuttle?fleet, Endeavour replaced Challenger, which exploded during liftoff in 1986, killing seven astronauts. It thundered off the launch pad 25 times, orbited Earth nearly 4,700 times and racked up 123 million miles.

Last month, it wowed throngs with a dizzying aerial loop, soaring over the state Capitol, Golden Gate Bridge, Hollywood Sign and other California landmarks while strapped to the back of a modified 747 before finally landing at LAX.

The last leg of Endeavour's retirement journey skips the tourist attractions and instead, winds through blue-collar communities in southern Los Angeles County. While viewing will be severely curtailed due to sidewalk shutdowns, crowds are still expected.

Moving the Endeavour required a specialized carrier typically used to haul oil rigs, bridges and heavy equipment. The wheels can spin in any direction, allowing the?shuttle?to zigzag past obstacles. An operator walks alongside, controlling the movements via joystick. Several spotters along the wings are on the lookout for hazards.

To make room for the five-story-tall?shuttle?and its 78-foot wingspan, some 400 trees were chopped down, cable and telephone lines were raised, and steel plates were laid down to protect the streets and underground utilities.

Endeavour will mostly travel on wide boulevards with some boasting as many lanes as a freeway. While there have been advance preparations, there is remaining work to be done during the move, including de-energizing power lines. Southern California Edison warned of outages in the suburb of Inglewood.

One of the trickiest parts involves trundling through a narrow residential street with apartment buildings on both sides. With Endeavour's wings expected to intrude into driveways, residents have been told to stay indoors until the?shuttle?passes.

The route was selected after ruling out other options. Dismantling the?shuttle?would have ruined the delicate heat tiles. Helicoptering it to its destination was not feasible. Neither was crossing on freeways since theshuttle?is too big to fit through the underpasses. The cost of transporting it cross-town was estimated at over $10 million.

As complex as the latest endeavor is, Southern California is no stranger to moving heavy things.
